Man Utd's Pursuit of Liverpool Youngster Could Rewrite Football History

Manchester United have signed 16-year-old winger Isaac Konde for their U-18 squad. The notable acquisition comes amid speculation that JJ Gabriel may soon leave the club, and also represents a rare instance of a player making a direct move between the Red Devils and Liverpool.

United confirmed the signing this week, with Konde pictured in official photos at Old Trafford. A club statement described him as a "talented youngster" and added that "everyone at the club would like to welcome Isaac to United and wish him the very best of luck."

Konde turns 17 next month, at which point he becomes eligible to sign his first professional contract. The Athletic reports that a five-year deal in total has been agreed upon, indicating strong belief in his potential and a structured long-term development pathway.

However, transfers between Liverpool and Manchester United in either direction are extremely uncommon. Such moves rarely occur even at youth level and are virtually unheard of among senior players.

Prior to Konde, Ethan Ennis completed the same journey in 2021, crossing from Liverpool to Manchester at age 16. He eventually progressed to United's U-21 side before departing permanently last summer to League One club Stockport County. Defender Scott Wootton made the switch from Liverpool to United around his 16th birthday in 2007 and went on to make four first-team appearances.

A few other cases in the 21st century involved players who were considerably younger.

Charlie McNeill built a reputation as a prolific youth scorer, reportedly netting over 600 goals. Born in Manchester, he had a brief spell with Liverpool before joining United at around eight years old. The forward later moved to Manchester City and returned to United, but now, at 23, plays for Sheffield Wednesday while on loan at Crewe Alexandra.

Jack Harrison was at Liverpool from the age of seven before moving to United's academy, where he spent seven years. He made his mark in the United States after leaving England at 14, but went on to play 181 Premier League matches for Leeds and Everton.

The Last Player to Transfer Between Man Utd, Liverpool

No professional player has moved directly between the two rival clubs in 62 years. The most recent example was Phil Chisnall, a homegrown Manchester United forward who broke into the first team in the aftermath of the 1958 Munich air disaster. He made 47 appearances and scored 10 goals, but his chances appeared to diminish around the time George Best burst onto the scene, and he was given the opportunity to join Liverpool in 1964 at just 21 years old.

At that time, while a rivalry between the two northwest English industrial cities had existed for centuries, an intense footballing rivalry had not yet developed. Manchester City and Everton had been the dominant clubs from their respective cities in the 1930s, and United and Liverpool didn't regularly compete for the same honours until the second half of the 1960s. Iconic managers Matt Busby and Bill Shankly were even close personal friends.

By the 1970s, the rivalry as we recognise it today was rapidly forming.

Liverpool began Chisnall's debut season as England's defending champions. United then claimed the league title that same year. Yet he featured only nine times for his new club before joining Southend United in 1967. His playing career concluded at Stockport County in 1972, and he retired before reaching the age of 30.

Gabriel Heinze attempted to force a move from Old Trafford to Anfield in 2007 but was blocked, with United opting to sell the Argentine defender to Real Madrid instead.

Man Utd's U-18 Recruitment Drive

Konde is not the only academy recruit United have brought in from a rival club in recent days. Central midfielder David Eze, also 16, has joined the Red Devils  after departing Manchester City. The previous week saw 17-year-old Karim Cassim arrive, likewise from City.

However, the movement goes both ways, as United recently lost James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye—both slightly older and on the fringes of first-team football—who departed to join Arsenal.

Rio Ngumoha spent eight years in Chelsea's academy before signing with Liverpool just days after his 16th birthday in 2024. The aforementioned Gabriel, meanwhile, had brief stints at Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United before relocating away from London.

When Gabriel's situation was raised by Gary Neville on a recent episode of Stick to Football, he reflected on how the academy landscape has shifted since his own days as a young talent 35 years ago. "We know now that young players have got representation at that age. We know that they are actually more willing to make braver decisions than maybe we were in our day," he said.

"If you were at United as a kid, or Liverpool, you were at that club—you weren't leaving."
