Manchester United Left Seething Over Bryan Mbeumo Transfer Debacle
Although Manchester United successfully secured their long-pursued target Bryan Mbeumo, the club is reportedly frustrated with Brentford's approach during transfer negotiations.
Following six weeks of varying transfer rumors, United finally landed their desired player. The Red Devils ultimately reached an agreement on Monday valued at approximately £71 million ($95.7 million), comprising an upfront payment of £65 million ($87.6 million) plus additional £6 million ($8.1 million) distributed across four years. However, behind-the-scenes details of the negotiations have started to surface.
United reportedly initiated discussions with a bid of £45 million ($61 million) plus £10 million ($13.5 million) in variables, which Brentford quickly rejected. Throughout multiple negotiation phases, United allege that the Bees consistently "moved the goalposts", according to The Telegraph. Following numerous complex discussions, Brentford's ultimate valuation was reportedly £70 million ($94.4 million) plus £7 million ($9.4 million) in performance-related bonuses.
Once it became apparent that United wouldn't fully meet those requirements, Brentford allegedly attempted to steer Mbeumo toward Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs were anticipated to be more willing to satisfy the asking price without matching United's wage offer.
To secure a higher transfer fee, Brentford purportedly suggested that Mbeumo reduce his wage expectations. BBC Sport characterized this as a "cheeky mention" while other media sources were more critical in their coverage.
It seems that Mbeumo's desire to join United extended beyond financial considerations. "Once I learned there was an opportunity to join Manchester United, I had to seize the chance to sign for my dream club; the team whose jersey I wore as a child," he expressed during his presentation.
"My approach is to continuously improve from the previous day. I believe I possess the mindset and determination to elevate my game here, learning under Ruben Amorim and competing alongside elite players.
