Manchester United's Top Transfer Target Turned Down Old Trafford Switch This Year

Manchester United failed in their pursuit of Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi during his brief spell as a free agent last summer, according to recent reports.

At that time, the Red Devils were under Erik ten Hag's management, with the Dutch coach looking to strengthen his midfield following their FA Cup triumph at Wembley. While United ultimately secured Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, Leicester's Ndidi had been among their target list.

As reported by The Standard, United made approaches for the Nigerian star after his Leicester deal expired last summer. The midfielder remained without a club for three weeks, attracting attention from Fulham, Everton, and West Ham United, before deciding to renew his commitment to Leicester following their Premier League promotion.

Unfortunately, the 2024-25 campaign turned into a nightmare for Leicester, as they dropped back to the Championship after accumulating merely 25 points and changing managers twice. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper, was dismissed in June.

Reports suggest that Ndidi, who made 28 league appearances last term, can be acquired for £9 million ($12.2 million) this summer thanks to a relegation clause in his 2024 contract, with United reportedly showing renewed interest in the Nigerian midfielder.

Central midfield isn't considered a top priority for United, as they focus on revitalizing their forward line. Following Matheus Cunha's arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers, United are working to finalize a deal for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. With a hectic summer expected at Old Trafford, cost-effective acquisitions like Ndidi might become attractive options later in the transfer period.

Ndidi, a Leicester player since 2017, is seeking a departure, and there's potential for the Nigerian to secure a Premier League transfer, particularly considering his affordable price tag.
