Marc Guiu Reveals Shocking Truth Behind His Barcelona Departure
Chelsea striker Marc Guiu caught many off guard when he departed Barcelona for west London last summer, though the player places partial responsibility on Hansi Flick.
Guiu made his professional bow for Barcelona in October 2023 against Athletic Club. The 17-year-old etched his name in history by netting his maiden goal for Barça merely 33 seconds after entering the field on his debut.
The youngster was among the promising La Masia academy products that former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernández trusted and integrated into the senior squad, alongside Fermín López, Pau Cubarsí and naturally, Lamine Yamal.
Guiu found the net twice across seven outings for the Catalans during 2023–24, but circumstances shifted dramatically after Xavi departed and Flick took charge. Following the German's appointment, Guiu's future at his childhood club became uncertain, leading to his departure from Barcelona.
Guiu: 'I Could've Played More' at Barcelona
The current Chelsea player discussed his Barcelona exit with TV3 and took a subtle dig at Flick.
"To be honest, I believe I could've featured more," Guiu stated, according to Sport. "But it was evident the club had different plans. [Robert] Lewandowski was already there and they had just brought in Vitor Roque. It was obvious there wasn't room for me.
"The sole occasion I conversed with Hansi Flick, I recall was during a playoff when he advised me to perform well. Truthfully, I would have appreciated the manager reaching out to me, but that didn't happen. Eventually I recognized the circumstances weren't favorable for me and chose to move on."
Chelsea activated Guiu's €6 million ($6.4 million) buyout clause last summer. The young Spanish talent has made 17 appearances for the Blues and scored six goals.
Guiu was sent on loan to Sunderland at the beginning of the 2025–26 campaign, but following three matches and one goal, he was brought back from his loan spell due to Nicolas Jackson's exit and Liam Delap's injury.
The 19-year-old now seeks to establish himself in Enzo Maresca's squad to further his progression.
