Marcos Senesi's Next Move: Five Best Free Transfer Destinations Revealed and Ranked

Marcos Senesi's Next Move: Five Best Free Transfer Destinations Revealed and Ranked

Marcos Senesi is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing names in this summer's transfer market, with the defender set to become a free agent when his Bournemouth contract expires on June 30.

Senesi still has a slim chance of featuring at the World Cup with Argentina after earning a call-up to an extended March squad. Regardless, the summer promises to be a pivotal one as he faces a major decision regarding the next chapter of his club career.

The 28-year-old has spent four years at Bournemouth since making the move to England in 2022 following the club's return to the Premier League from the EFL Championship. He has largely been a first-choice starter throughout his time there—only a serious hamstring injury restricted him to 17 Premier League outings last season. Senesi has featured for nearly every minute of the 2025–26 campaign so far.

With Bournemouth now firmly established in the top flight, he has demonstrated the quality needed to hold his own in one of football's most demanding leagues. While he may not be an elite-level performer, Senesi could still offer genuine value to clubs near the top of the table—particularly given that his free agent status makes any potential deal relatively uncomplicated.

5. Liverpool

Marcos Senesi, Arne Slot

Even if Ibrahima Konaté ends up putting pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield, Liverpool are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements heading into next season, with 2025–26 laying bare a worrying shortage of depth at center back.

Senesi represents a far more financially sensible option than activating the reported $94.4 million (£69.6 million, €80 million) buy-back clause for Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

He's also no stranger to Arne Slot. The Argentine spent a season under Slot at Feyenoord in 2021–22, just before joining Bournemouth. Senesi made 50 appearances during that spell and played a part in the Dutch side's run to the UEFA Conference League final.

4. Manchester United

Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire

Manchester United's shift back to a 4-2-3-1 system under Ruben Amorim has reduced the demand for center back numbers somewhat. However, persistent injuries to Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt's four-month absence raise genuine concerns about whether the Red Devils have adequate cover.

When fully fit, Martínez and De Ligt—or Martínez and Harry Maguire—would be the preferred pairing. But Senesi could prove a shrewd free agent addition, particularly with the club's transfer budget this summer needing to be focused primarily on signing two or more central midfielders.

There's also a possibility that Andoni Iraola could arrive at Old Trafford before the start of next season.

3. Chelsea

Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesey Fofana

At 28, Senesi would rank among the more experienced figures in Chelsea's squad. That composure and know-how could prove invaluable to a group that is otherwise heavily youthful and lacking in dependable defensive options.

Given that Chelsea ultimately aspire to compete for Premier League and Champions League honours, there are real concerns surrounding Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoït Badiashile, all of whom have shown the kind of vulnerability the Blues can ill afford if those ambitions are to be realised.

Among their remaining options, Trevoh Chalobah finds himself on the fringes, while Mamadou Sarr and Josh Acheampong have a combined age of just 39 and are still very much works in progress.

2. Barcelona

Ronald Araujo

A ball-playing center back with the ability to progress possession and pick out incisive passes sounds tailor-made for Barcelona's style of play.

On top of that, the words 'free transfer' are always welcome news for those pulling the strings at the Camp Nou.

If Barça can find a willing buyer for Ronald Araújo—who has barely featured at center back throughout the season—and bring in Senesi as a replacement, it would represent an astute piece of financial planning.

1. Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero

Should Tottenham Hotspur retain their Premier League status, the club makes a compelling fit for Senesi, who could even find himself stepping into the shoes of fellow Argentine Cristian Romero. Questions over the captain's future beyond this season continue to linger.

Spurs appears to be the destination where Senesi would have the best chance of nailing down a regular starting berth, and he would complement Micky van de Ven well—provided the Dutchman isn't lured away.

If Spurs were to suffer relegation, however, this would almost certainly be a non-starter for Senesi, making it simultaneously his most and least likely landing spot.
