Marcus Rashford Reclaims His Place at Man Utd With a Fresh Squad Number

Marcus Rashford's comeback to Manchester United carries complications beyond simply determining what role awaits him 20 months after his last appearance for the club.

Rashford is set to join up with United this week on the next stage of the summer tour across northern Europe. This follows the conclusion of a post-World Cup rest period after England's involvement in the tournament through to the final weekend, and could see him back in action as early as Wednesday, when the Red Devils take on Leeds United at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

However, when he departed for Barcelona on loan last summer — with an option for the Spanish club to make the move permanent at a fixed fee below market value — few anticipated he would be leaving Camp Nou after just a single season. Rashford's No. 10 shirt at Old Trafford was handed over to Matheus Cunha, and now the 28-year-old, who wore that number across seven seasons, will need to find a new one.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Rashford will be assigned the available No. 14 shirt. It is the same number he wore during his time at Barcelona, and it clearly holds significant meaning for him following the strong bond he developed with the club and city throughout his loan spell.

The No. 9 shirt was also unoccupied, but it appears Rashford preferred the No. 14.

History of Man Utd's No. 14 Shirt

Since permanent squad numbers were introduced in the Premier League in 1993, United's No. 14 has been worn by 10 different players on a full-time basis. The shirt went unassigned last season, with Christian Eriksen being its most recent occupant during his brief stint at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard and Javier Hernández are among the recognizable names to have worn it, but the most celebrated No. 14 in United's history remains Andrei Kanchelskis, who was the first to don it for the club in the top flight. The Ukrainian winger won the Premier League title twice and led United's scoring charts in the 1994–95 season with 15 goals across all competitions.

Left-Wing Role Waiting for Rashford to Fill

In his update regarding the shirt number, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Rashford will be reintegrated into the Manchester United first-team setup. The sole exception would be if a "top European club" submits an offer within the remaining three weeks of the transfer window.

For now, there is little indication that such an offer is forthcoming, meaning re-establishing himself in Manchester is the most immediate path ahead, with two years still remaining on his contract.

Rashford could ultimately prove to be a key contributor for United this season. The squad continues to lack a natural left-wing option, with Cunha — primarily a No. 10 or striker — and Patrick Dorgu — adapting to the role from left back — serving as the main choices in 2025–26.

While not a guaranteed starter at Barcelona, Rashford still made a consistent impact last season, contributing 28 goals and assists across all competitions. At his peak for United during the 2022–23 campaign, he tallied 30 goals and remains the only player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era to reach that landmark in a single season.
