Few could have predicted that when Marcus Rashford walked off the pitch in the second half of a Europa League win over Viktoria Plzeň in December 2024, it would mark his last Manchester United appearance for 611 days.
Rashford had netted three goals in three consecutive starts following Ruben Amorim's arrival the month prior, building a strong case for his continued place under yet another manager at Old Trafford. Amorim, though, had different plans.
Once it became evident that the uncompromising Portuguese coach had completely lost confidence in a player he viewed as a poor trainer, it seemed as though the United academy product would never again feature for the club he grew up supporting.
Even following Amorim's dismissal in January, Rashford appeared more likely to be pulling on a Barcelona shirt than returning to United, as he thrived during a productive loan stint in Catalonia. However, despite racking up 14 goals and 14 assists as Barça cruised to a second straight league title, a permanent transfer could not be agreed upon—much to the frustration of the player and Barcelona boss Hansi Flick.
Michael Carrick unlocked the door for his former teammate's comeback and reintegrated him into the squad for Saturday's friendly against an AC Milan side that happened to be led by none other than Ruben Amorim. Yet United's prodigal returnee would have to wait a little longer for any meaningful redemption.

Despite his teammates' best efforts to counter the narrative, Rashford has been burdened with an unhelpful reputation as a luxury player whose dedication is frequently questioned. Amorim was certainly unimpressed with someone who fell below Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount and even goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital in his personal hierarchy at United.
While many would reasonably push back against claims of poor application from Rashford in training, his off-ball intensity in competitive fixtures has been legitimately scrutinised. The Barcelona loanee ranked second from bottom for total pressures per 90 minutes among all qualifying attacking players in La Liga last season, per Gradient Sports. He recorded 22.5. The divisional average stood at 42.1. Only Real Madrid's notoriously static Kylian Mbappé was less industrious.
That reputation may well have been weighing on him as Amorim watched from the same left touchline along which Rashford patrolled during his 30-minute cameo on Saturday. Like the rest of United's attack, the England international pressed aggressively in a high block off the ball. One moment stood out in particular — a determined sprint from Rashford to slide in and dispossess Milan's Mario Gila.
His opportunities in possession were considerably more scarce. Bryan Mbeumo drifted infield from centre forward to link up uncertainly with his new teammate on a couple of occasions, while one in-swinging cross drifted harmlessly away from any of his white-shirted colleagues.
The best glimpse of goal for United's returning forward came after Milan had already struck twice in rapid succession to move 4–2 ahead. Rashford narrowly misjudged the flight of Lisandro Martínez's perfectly weighted through ball, which dropped eight yards from goal, curiously withdrawing his foot from what could have been a desperate prod as Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani stood firm.
None of Carrick's players particularly distinguished themselves, though Patrick Dorgu did inject some life into his showing on the left flank with an opportunistic goal at the beginning of the second half. After nearly 20 months away from the club, it would be surprising to see Rashford named in United's starting lineup for their Premier League opener against Hull City next Saturday — but his brief flickers of pace, promise and, perhaps most importantly, intent, offered grounds for optimism heading into his second chapter in Manchester.
