Mourinho is a natural fit as a central figure in El Clásico. "Catalunya is a country and FC Barcelona is their army," former Barça manager Sir Bobby Robson once famously remarked. Those words would have been translated by Mourinho himself, who served as the English coach's trusted assistant during the 1996–97 campaign at Camp Nou.
While Robson was swiftly moved out of the dugout into an advisory capacity, Mourinho kept his place on the bench alongside new head coach Louis van Gaal. The charismatic polyglot forged a close bond with midfielder Pep Guardiola and became a devoted member of the Barcelona faithful. As he famously declared into a microphone following one trophy celebration: "Today, tomorrow and always; I will have Barcelona in my heart."
After cementing his reputation as one of Europe's top club managers with Porto and Chelsea, Mourinho put himself forward for the vacant Barcelona position in 2008. Despite an impressive PowerPoint presentation, the board opted for a former player: Guardiola. From that moment on, Mourinho increasingly cast himself as the anti-Barcelona.
Real Madrid brought in the self-assured 'Special One' in 2010 to unseat Guardiola's dominant Catalans. The results weren't immediate: Barcelona famously handed Madrid a humiliating 5–0 defeat in Mourinho's first Clásico.
What unfolded in the spring of 2011 stands as the most intense 18-day stretch in the fixture's storied history. In just over two weeks, Madrid and Barcelona clashed in four Clásicos across three separate competitions. Following a tense 1–1 league draw that favored leaders Barcelona, Mourinho's side claimed the Copa del Rey final. Powered largely by Lionel Messi's individual genius, Barcelona secured a 3–1 aggregate win across the two legs of a Champions League semifinal.
By the conclusion of his three years in Spain, Mourinho had absorbed as many blows as he had delivered during an increasingly poisonous rivalry — though Tito Vilanova might have disputed that. Mourinho infamously jabbed Barcelona's assistant coach in the eye during a touchline altercation. He later claimed not to know "this Pito Vilanova, or whatever his name is," despite knowing full well who he was — and that 'pito' doubled as Spanish slang for male genitalia.
When Do Real Madrid Host Barcelona at the Bernabéu?
Barcelona must wait until May for their trip to Madrid's Bernabéu in La Liga. No exact date has been confirmed, but the match is tentatively scheduled for the weekend starting Saturday, May 8.
By that stage, it could shape up as a direct battle for the La Liga title, with just three more rounds of fixtures remaining.
Madrid and Barcelona could well face each other before then, with the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and even Champions League knockout rounds all offering potential meeting points for the two sides.
