The English Football League (EFL) has revealed a mid-June opening for the 2026 summer transfer window, alongside the scheduled dates for the upcoming winter transfer window in early 2027.
Wrexham will compete in their fourth consecutive EFL season after falling short of promotion to the Premier League. The Red Dragons ended up seventh in the Championship standings, just two points adrift of playoff winners Hull City, who secured the last available playoff berth.
The Welsh side will draw plenty of encouragement from their first campaign back in the second tier in 43 years, though a sense of frustration lingered after they couldn't quite seal the deal late in the season. Expectations are already building that the upcoming campaign will be significantly more challenging, with three sides dropping from the Premier League set to benefit from parachute payments.
Phil Parkinson has also acknowledged that Wrexham will need to "improve" if they are to mount a promotion challenge in 2026–27, while the Championship playoffs will be expanded from four teams to six, meaning a top-eight finish will be sufficient to qualify for the postseason.
Here is everything you need to know about the Championship summer transfer window.
When Does the Championship Transfer Window Open?
The EFL has confirmed the dates for both the summer and winter transfer windows ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The summer window will open on Monday, June 15, 2026, and close at 11 p.m. BST (6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. PT) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The winter window will open on Friday, January 1, 2027, and close at 11 p.m. GMT (6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. PT) on Monday, February 1, 2027.
When Does the 2026-27 Championship Season Start?
The EFL has also announced the schedule for the 2026-27 Championship season.
The 2026-27 campaign will kick off with the first round of the Carabao Cup over the August 7-9 weekend, before the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One, and Sky Bet League Two get underway the following weekend of August 14-16.
What Are the Championship Squad Rules?

Wrexham must adhere to Championship squad regulations as they map out their summer transfer plans.
Each club in the division is permitted to register a maximum squad of 25 players aged over 21, of whom eight must qualify as "homegrown" and two must be goalkeepers. Players aged under 21 are exempt from registration requirements, though all loan signings must be registered regardless of their age.
A homegrown player is defined as any player who has been registered with a club affiliated with either The Football Association (FA) or the Football Association of Wales (FAW) for three full seasons (or 36 months) prior to their 21st birthday, or before the conclusion of the season in which they turn 21.
Wrexham are free to field as many different players as they wish during the opening month of the season, after which their squad list must be formally submitted once the summer transfer window closes.
