Martin Zubimendi Reveals the Shocking Reason He Picked Arsenal Over Real Madrid's Pursuit

Martin Zubimendi disclosed that he had "focused his attention" on joining Arsenal during the summer transfer window, even amid widespread rumors linking him with a possible move to Real Madrid.
The highly sought-after midfielder, who previously played for Real Sociedad, had come close to finalizing a transfer to Liverpool the previous year before suddenly withdrawing from all discussions. Zubimendi described that rejection as a "self-centered" choice made to guarantee he could develop his skills in the more comfortable and supportive atmosphere of San Sebastián.
Twelve months later, Zubimendi had concluded it was the right moment to depart from his childhood club. Arsenal's interest—which had persisted for no less than a year—continued, though Real Madrid were also believed to be pursuing him. The hiring of Xabi Alonso, a hero to his fellow Spaniard who had coached him in Real Sociedad's reserve squad, was seen as another advantage for Madrid.
Nevertheless, Zubimendi had only one club in his thoughts. "After I chose to leave, I focused my attention on Arsenal because I believe their playing philosophy suits me well," the 26-year-old stated after completing a transfer that may reach £60 million ($81.9 million).
"They're a youthful, extremely driven and determined squad," Zubimendi added. "They've demonstrated their capabilities lately, and I'm convinced their greatest achievements lie ahead. The moment you arrive here, you understand the magnitude of this club and this team. [Sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and [manager] Mikel [Arteta] provided outstanding support, eliminating any uncertainty I had.
"This represents a pivotal point in my professional journey. It's the transfer I was seeking; one I was eager to complete. Naturally, it's a significant transition, but I'm prepared to begin."
Although Arteta didn't receive the same elevated introduction as Alonso, he also originates from the identical Basque region as Zubimendi. "We share many similarities," Arsenal's newest signing explained. "We're from the same hometown and represented the same clubs. We'll have plenty to discuss away from football, which pleases me."
Zubimendi will also recognize his former Real Sociedad colleagues Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino, along with fellow countryman David Raya. "I'm delighted to be here alongside them," the Spain national team player expressed enthusiastically. "It's significant because it will make my adjustment much smoother, and I'm confident they'll provide tremendous assistance."
