Martinelli's Magic Saves Arsenal as Gunners Battle City to Thrilling 1-1 Stalemate
Arsenal secured a 1–1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday, concluding the most recent Premier League matchday in an intriguing encounter for both teams.
Mikel Arteta welcomed back William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Ben White from injury for this fixture, though Martin Ødegaard remained unavailable. Consequently, the Arsenal boss maintained the same midfield configuration from their Champions League victory against Athletic Club. A three-man midfield lacking in creative spark aimed to stifle Man City early on, though this strategy didn't unfold as intended.
The Gunners fell behind after nine minutes through what was essentially Man City's opening attack of the match. The visitors executed a ruthless counter-attack with Tijjani Reijnders locating Erling Haaland at the penalty area's edge. The Norwegian striker took a simple touch into the box before clinically finishing past David Raya.
Man City established greater control as the game progressed while enjoying increased possession. Reijnders, Rodri and Phil Foden dominated proceedings, pressing aggressively when out of possession. The Citizens were happy to frustrate their opponents defensively, disrupting the flow of play. Arsenal struggled to maintain offensive rhythm needed to consistently threaten City. When opportunities arose, the home side appeared more menacing, but such moments were scarce in the opening period.
Noni Madueke created the Gunners' best opportunity during first-half injury time, unleashing a shot at Gianluigi Donnarumma that required the Italian keeper to make a save at his near post. Viktor Gyökeres continued to receive limited service throughout.

Arteta introduced two changes at the interval, bringing on Eberechi Eze and Saka. A more attacking approach saw Arsenal take the initiative early in the second half, though they continued to find Donnarumma difficult to beat. Pep Guardiola strengthened his defensive setup, openly willing to preserve the lead through a compact defensive structure. Gabriel Martinelli entered the fray late alongside Ethan Nwaneri, but Guardiola responded by introducing John Stones.
With only five minutes remaining in added time, Eze finally breached the Man City defensive line with a clever ball over the defense. Martinelli connected with the chipped delivery and managed to lift it over Donnarumma to salvage a draw.
The most satisfied party will be Liverpool as two of their main title rivals dropped points on the same afternoon.
