Mbappe Breaks Silence on Injury Reality—And Real Madrid Still Have Plenty to Worry About

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé has pushed back against the "false" rumors surrounding his knee injury in recent weeks, criticizing those who reported on it "without having any basis in fact."

The French international sat out three weeks of action for Los Blancos to finally address a persistent knee problem that had been bothering him since December. Speculation ran rampant about the seriousness of the injury, with certain reports suggesting Mbappé required surgery while others indicated he simply needed a brief rest period.

Now that he has made his return to the field, coming on as a substitute against both Manchester City and Atlético Madrid last week, the 27-year-old is clarifying the facts surrounding his injury.

"My knee is fine, much better," Mbappé said at a promotional event in France, where he will soon link up with Didier Deschamps's squad for the March international break.

"Things are going quite well, and I'm aware there has been a lot of speculation and some false claims made. That's the reality of being an elite athlete — you get used to people making statements without verifying them or having any factual basis."

Despite Mbappé's reassurances that his knee is "fine," Real Madrid will be monitoring him closely over the coming two weeks. The forward is expected to feature for Les Bleus in friendlies against Brazil and Colombia during the March international window.

The more cautious route would have been to keep Mbappé in the Spanish capital, eliminating any risk of aggravating his injury while on international duty, but with the 2026 World Cup rapidly approaching, such precautions are not a realistic option for France's captain.

Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa gave his blessing for Mbappé to join the national team setup, seeing it as a chance for his top scorer to "get more minutes" and "return better prepared" for the business end of the season.

It is widely expected that France will handle Mbappé with care. While Deschamps will look to use the upcoming international friendlies as World Cup preparation, the summer tournament will remain his primary concern — ensuring his key player stays fit and avoids another injury setback will almost certainly take precedence over playing him the full 180 minutes in March.

Mbappé's Return Shakes Up Real Madrid's Flying Form

Real Madrid

Real Madrid have looked like their dominant selves over the past three weeks. The club knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League 5–1 on aggregate, edged Atlético Madrid 3–2, and claimed victories over Celta Vigo and Elche.

Across their last five matches in all competitions, Los Blancos have scored 14 goals, conceded just five, and claimed five victories — all while Mbappé was either sidelined or limited to substitute appearances.

Reintegrating Mbappé hands Arbeloa his top scorer back at the most critical stage of the campaign. However, his return carries the risk of the team reverting to the difficulties that arose when the Frenchman was leading the attack.

There was an over-reliance on Mbappé, with the team consistently funneling the ball to him rather than distributing play more broadly. Vinicius Junior, who has been outstanding in recent weeks, was reduced to a supporting role alongside his high-profile strike partner and found it difficult to impose himself on matches. When Mbappé failed to score, the team rarely did either.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward also appears reluctant to press or make runs into the penalty area — two key areas in which Real Madrid have notably improved during their winning run. The challenge now falls on Arbeloa to smoothly fit Mbappé back into his system without disrupting the team's current momentum.
