Mbappe Equals Henry's Goal Tally, Inches Closer to Breaking France's All-Time Scoring Record
Kylian Mbappé maintained his exceptional form for both club and national team by netting the decisive goal in France's 2–0 victory over Ukraine on Friday night.
The clinical Real Madrid striker has been in phenomenal form this campaign. Following a summer where he battled gastroenteritis during the Club World Cup that required hospitalization, the 26-year-old utilized his brief recovery period to reach what may be the peak physical condition of his professional career.
More focused, physically superior and visibly content, Mbappé has already netted three times in three Real Madrid outings this season—excluding two strikes ruled out by VAR against Mallorca recently. "It's clear that Kylian is determined to achieve even greater heights following his impressive debut year," Madrid manager Xabi Alonso praised recently. "His ambition extends to enhancing both personal and team performances while motivating his colleagues.
"His determination is visible in every training session."
This intense ambition was on full display in Wrocław yet again. Michael Olise opened the scoring for France in the opening period before Mbappé confirmed the victory in this World Cup qualifying match. Racing beyond Ukraine's defensive line to collect a sweeping 70-yard pass through the middle from Madrid colleague Aurélien Tchouameni, France's captain confronted Paris Saint-Germain's new signing Illia Zabarnyi, spun him around completely before slotting the ball into the near corner.
Mbappé's fourth strike of this young season marked his 51st international goal, equaling the impressive record established by his boyhood hero Thierry Henry. The current Real Madrid sensation required only 89 matches to match a total Henry accumulated over 123 international appearances.
Only Olivier Giroud has found the net more frequently for the men's national side, though that record of 57 goals could be overtaken before year's end if Mbappé continues his current trajectory.
Spanish media characterize Madrid's No. 10's relentless approach as "killer mode," mirroring the unapologetically goal-focused mentality once displayed in the capital by Cristiano Ronaldo. Demonstrating his commitment to constant improvement, Mbappé wasn't completely pleased with his milestone evening in Poland.
"We had opportunities for more goals," he remarked, "I personally squandered several chances, so there's definitely scope for enhancement." Though minimal.
