Mbappe Hits 100 Champions League Games: How Does He Stack Up Against Messi and Ronaldo's Legendary Benchmarks?

Kylian Mbappé marked a historic milestone by becoming the youngest player ever to appear in 100 Champions League matches, doing so during Real Madrid's stunning 4–3 comeback victory over Roma on Wednesday evening.

The French superstar opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho's side, bringing his tally to 72 goals across 100 appearances on European football's grandest stage.

It seems like just moments ago that the now-Real Madrid star first burst onto the scene with Monaco in the 2016–17 campaign, netting his debut Champions League goal in a thrilling 5–3 away victory over Manchester City in the round of 16.

Mbappé made the switch to Paris Saint-Germain the following season and has continued to cement his reputation as one of the all-time greats in the competition's history.

Club football's most coveted prize has yet to find its way into Mbappé's hands, but at just 27 years old, he has spent nearly a decade finding the net with remarkable consistency, keeping himself firmly in the conversation among the Champions League's greatest ever scorers through 100 appearances.

How Mbappé Compares to Ronaldo, Messi After 100 Champions League Games

Across his 100 Champions League outings, Mbappé has netted 72 times and contributed 25 assists. His goal against Roma allowed him to surpass Real Madrid icon Raúl, placing him fifth on the all-time scoring charts in the competition.

Mbappé still has considerable ground to cover before threatening Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the top two scorers in Champions League history. However, considering his age and his output through 100 games, there is genuine belief that he could match or even surpass both legends before his career is over.

Ronaldo, the competition's record scorer, had managed just 66 of his eventual 140 goals by the time he reached his 100th Champions League appearance. Messi finished with 129 goals and had tallied 77 after 100 games. Mbappé sits between the two at 72, and with the tournament's expanded format, he has ample opportunity to close the gap.

Robert Lewandowski is the only other player to surpass the 100-goal mark in the Champions League. The Polish legend, however, had an extraordinary 81 goals to his name through his first 100 appearances.

Beyond the numbers, both Messi and Ronaldo had already lifted the Champions League trophy within their first 100 appearances in the competition.

Mbappé came closest to glory in 2019–20, when PSG fell 1–0 to Bayern Munich in the final. He has not advanced beyond the semifinal stage since that occasion.

Mbappé Wants Champions League Title 'More Than Anything'

Kylian Mbappé celebrating for Real Madrid.

Just days after Real Madrid claimed a record-extending 15th Champions League crown in 2024, Mbappé arrived at the Bernabéu with many anticipating the club would forge another era of European dominance. Yet since his arrival in the Spanish capital, both Mbappé and Madrid have been unable to progress beyond the quarterfinals.

Mbappé has won a World Cup and holds the record as the competition's all-time top scorer, yet he has openly admitted that lifting the Champions League with Real Madrid is what he desires "more than anything."

"That's the objective, that's the goal [to win the Champions League]," Mbappé told CBS Sports following Madrid's opening-day triumph against Inter Milan. "That's what I said yesterday about the Ballon d'Or, but the Champions League is even more important.

"I play for the club of my dreams. It's really important for me to win the Champions League here in Madrid. I want it more than anything."

While Real Madrid have not been at their most convincing so far in 2026–27, they remain one of Europe's elite sides, and Mbappé is the kind of player who can decide matches almost on his own. Whether this proves to be the season the already-iconic Frenchman achieves the one thing he craves above all else remains to be seen.
