Mbappe Joins Messi and Ronaldo in Exclusive Club by Pulling Off Remarkable Historic Feat

Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé has become the first player outside of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in 38 years to win the Pichichi Trophy in consecutive seasons.

Despite battling a persistent knee injury that kept him sidelined for a considerable stretch, the 27-year-old claimed La Liga's Golden Boot for his impressive 2025–26 campaign. Mbappé netted 25 goals in Spain's top division, finishing two ahead of Mallorca's Vedat Muriqi.

Both players scored on the final day of the season, but the French forward had already built a two-goal lead that effectively sealed the award. He led the league's scoring charts in just 31 outings, while runner-up Muriqi and third-place Ante Budimir of Osasuna each made 37 appearances.

Lionel Messi

Mbappé has now captured two Pichichi trophies across his two seasons at Real Madrid. The only other players to win the award in back-to-back seasons in the 21st century are Messi and Ronaldo.

Messi, who holds the record with eight Pichichi titles, claimed the award in the following seasons:

Ronaldo won the trophy just three times during his nine-year stint at Real Madrid, collecting it in 2010–11, 2013–14, and 2014–15.

The last occasion a player other than those two legends won the Pichichi in successive seasons was 36 years ago, when Real Madrid's Hugo Sánchez claimed the honor four consecutive times between 1984 and 1988.

Barcelona icon Samuel Eto'o technically led La Liga's scoring charts in both 2004–05 and 2005–06, but Spanish newspaper MARCA credited one of his goals to a teammate, handing Villarreal's Diego Forlan the sole award in 2004–05. The Catalan club continues to regard that ruling as "dubious" to this day.

Mbappé Still Chasing First Major Trophy

Kylian Mbappé

Despite his individual achievements and record-breaking performances since arriving at Real Madrid before the 2024–25 season, Mbappé has yet to guide Los Blancos to a major title. Across his two seasons in the Spanish capital, the club has only lifted the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Beyond those, the 15-time European champions have fallen short in every significant competition. During Mbappé's first season, Real Madrid finished as runners-up in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, while also bowing out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage.

The 2025–26 campaign told a similar story for Mbappé and his teammates. They again finished second in La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, were knocked out in the Copa del Rey round of 16, and once more exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals. The side was also eliminated at the semifinal stage of the FIFA Club World Cup.

While Mbappé has registered 86 goals in 103 appearances for Real Madrid, his output has not translated into major silverware for the club — a notable blemish on an otherwise glittering career.
