Álvaro Arbeloa voiced his frustration over referee Michael Oliver's decision-making after Bayern Munich's Jonathan Tah avoided a red card for dangerous play, having caught Kylian Mbappé on the calf with his studs—a challenge that tore through the Frenchman's sock and left a visible wound on his leg.
Real Madrid suffered a 2–1 home loss at the Bernabéu, with goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane on either side of the break doing the damage. Mbappé pulled one back late in the match by converting Trent Alexander-Arnold's incisive cross and was undoubtedly Madrid's best player on the night—he could have added more to his tally, registering six shots in total while causing constant problems for Bayern's defensive line.
Mbappé's relentless attacking play drew close attention from the Bayern defence, with Tah delivering a particularly fierce challenge on the 27-year-old in the second half. The former Leverkusen centre-back connected with Mbappé high on the ankle with his studs, sending the forward crashing to the turf.
Arbeloa Doesn't Understand How Tah Avoided Red Card

English referee Oliver responded to the challenge with only a yellow card. Nevertheless, Arbeloa was furious over the incident that left Mbappé with a shredded sock and stud marks across his right calf.
During his post-match press conference, Arbeloa was first asked about the booking that will rule out midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni for the second leg in Munich, before he shifted focus to Oliver, arguing that a red card should have been issued.
"I don't know what the referee saw (for Tchouameni's booking), but I also don't know what he saw in the play that should have been a red card for the tackle on Mbappé," he complained.
"These are decisions that are hard to understand."
A photo from the match showing Mbappé's shredded sock spread rapidly across social media after the final whistle, amplifying the anger surrounding the incident. Despite the alarming nature of the challenge, there are no reports of any serious injury to the French forward, who is expected to be available for the return fixture next week. Tchouaméni, meanwhile, will serve his suspension and miss the trip to Munich.
Arbeloa Lays Down Challenge to 14-Goal Mbappé

Arbeloa also commended Mbappé's display and urged his star attacker to maintain that level of commitment in every match.
"This is the Mbappé I want," Arbeloa told reporters. "Very invested in every area of the game, the best player in the world, a constant threat. An Mbappé that wants to be Mbappé every day."
Mbappé snapped a five-game scoring drought with his finish on Tuesday, his previous goal having come in a 2–0 victory over Valencia back in February.
With his potentially crucial goal against Bayern, Mbappé became just the seventh player in history to reach 14 or more goals in a single Champions League season, joining the elite ranks of José Altafini, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, and Karim Benzema.
