France narrowly defeated Paraguay 1–0 on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals, courtesy of a composed penalty from skipper Kylian Mbappé.
Les Bleus entered the World Cup round of 16 fixture as clear favorites, yet it proved to be a far from straightforward night for Didier Deschamps's squad. They were completely stumped by Paraguay's disciplined low block, failing to register a single shot on target throughout the entire first half.
France emerged from the break with greater intensity, but still struggled to find a way through. The sweltering conditions in Philadelphia did the 2018 world champions no favors, until Désiré Doué finally broke the deadlock open.
The 21-year-old used his nimble footwork to earn his team a penalty that Mbappé converted in the 70th minute, sealing France's passage to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Morocco on July 9.
The Moment That Changed the Game

After the hour mark at Lincoln Financial Field, everything was falling into place for Paraguay. The CONMEBOL outfit was strangling France with its low block, denying Deschamps's world-class forwards any room to maneuver. Coupled with their tactical fouling to disrupt the rhythm of play, La Albirroja held firm despite rarely having the ball.
Les Bleus were crying out for inspiration, a flash of creativity to find a breakthrough, and Doué delivered. The PSG winger, who had been left out in favor of Bradley Barcola in Deschamps's starting lineup, entered the fray in the 61st minute. Just four minutes later, he had won his side a penalty.
Doué surged into the box, weaving past two defenders before Gustavo Gómez came charging in and brought him down with a reckless challenge. Following a brief VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot.
Mbappé stepped up from 12 yards and slotted home the match's only goal. Without that moment of poor judgment from Gómez, Paraguay could easily have pushed France into extra time and potentially a penalty shootout, as they had done to Germany in the round of 32.

France Player Ratings vs. Paraguay (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*
GK: Mike Maignan—8.2: Threaded Mbappé through on goal with a stunning goal kick that deserved an assist. Was called into action only once throughout the match.
RB: Jules Koundé—7.6: Found space going forward as defenders gravitated toward Dembélé, but was unable to make the most of it. Never quite looked like producing the moment needed to crack Paraguay's defensive shape.
CB: Dayot Upamecano—8.3: Composed and assured as France maintained near-total control of possession. Kept Julio Enciso firmly in check, particularly during transitional phases.
CB: William Saliba—7.4: Rarely needed to venture deep into his own half for large stretches of the game. Performed his duties reliably when called upon, once again forming a solid partnership with Upamecano.
LB: Lucas Digne—7.8: Content to allow Barcola, Mbappé, and eventually Doué to lead the charge down the left flank. His delivery from wide areas, however, left much to be desired.
CM: Manu Koné—7.9: Injected some welcome physicality to give France a competitive edge in midfield. Rarely wasted possession and showed no hesitation in unleashing some threatening efforts on goal.
CM: Adrien Rabiot—7.4: Resorted to speculative long-range efforts that had Deschamps visibly agitated on the touchline. Sloppy in possession at various moments.
RW: Ousmane Dembélé—6.6: Unusually out of sync with his attacking teammates. Delivered ineffective service from wide and finished his outing without a single shot on target. A performance to forget.
AM: Michael Olise—7.2: Often a step ahead of play, occasionally to his own team's disadvantage. Struggled statistically and contributed just one chance late on in a match where France desperately needed invention.
LW: Bradley Barcola—7.0: Lively on the left in the opening stages, but lacked a cutting edge. Faded from the game as time wore on and was predictably substituted at the hour mark.
ST: Kylian Mbappé—8.2: Stepped up from the spot to net his seventh goal of the tournament. Otherwise, largely frustrated by a stubborn Paraguay backline. Found himself in physical battles on set pieces and on the break, with little protection from the referee.
SUB: Désiré Doué (61' for Barcola)—7.5: Announced himself immediately upon entering the pitch and earned a penalty for his side within minutes of coming on.
SUB: Rayan Cherki (84' for Dembélé)—N/A
Subs not used: Brice Samba (GK), Robin Risser (GK), Ibrahima Konaté, Lucas Hernández, Malo Gusto, Maxence Lacroix, Theo Hernández, Aurélien Tchouaméni, N'Golo Kanté, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Maghnes Akliouche, Marcus Thuram, Jean-Philippe Mateta.
