The 27-year-old wrapped up the summer with an extraordinary tally of 10 goals and four assists across eight appearances, earning him the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot — the prestigious prize awarded to the tournament's leading scorer. This marked Mbappé's second straight Golden Boot triumph, having first claimed the honor at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals. He stands alone as the only male player in World Cup history to have captured the award on multiple occasions.
His exploits this summer also propelled him to the top of the World Cup's all-time scoring charts with 22 goals in total, a milestone he reached across just three tournaments (2018, 2022, 2026). He had been locked in a fierce battle for the record with Argentine football icon Lionel Messi, who finished with 21 goals — a tally the 39-year-old accumulated over six tournaments (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026).
