Mbappe's Father Fires Back at Xabi Alonso's Bold Real Madrid Ultimatum: 'What Are We Asking Him?'

The father of Kylian Mbappé has cautioned Real Madrid's coach Xabi Alonso that it's unjust to expect defensive duties from a striker of his son's caliber.

Mbappé's arrival at Real Madrid during the previous campaign raised numerous concerns about his compatibility with the team, with many focusing on his apparent lack of defensive commitment when not in possession.

Alonso has openly stated that both Mbappé and Vinicius Junior need to enhance their defensive contributions to succeed under his management, but the French star's father argues that such duties should remain with designated defenders.

"Does a fullback function as an attacker or defender?" Wilfrid Mbappé questioned in an interview with L'Équipe. "What exactly are we expecting from him?

"I'm not suggesting Kylian shouldn't contribute defensively, but how should we evaluate a player? For a fullback, I don't prioritize crossing ability. Every position has distinct requirements. We're critiquing someone who consistently nets 60 goals per season. What I would fault him for, though, is if there's a confrontation nearby and he doesn't assist.

"This might be controversial, but that defensive sprint PSG's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia made in the Champions League final during the 90th minute - I'm indifferent to it. That's not Kylian's style of play. He accomplishes things others cannot achieve. This doesn't mean we should criticize Kvara for not scoring 60 goals annually.

"Therefore, everyone can take their stance, but I'm among those who will never make such demands of forwards. And this isn't because he's my child. I'm not opposed to defending, but if his role becomes purely defensive tracking back, we're discussing different things entirely!"

Wilfrid proceeded to commend Mbappé's reaction to the scrutiny surrounding his inaugural Real Madrid season.

"I was genuinely impressed. Given the difficult start and everyone predicting disaster, he concluded with the Pichichi trophy and the Golden Boot... His father couldn't be prouder," he added.

"He's demonstrating once more his mental fortitude and his enjoyment of the game. As long as he remains content, he'll achieve success. His ambitions include winning the Champions League, La Liga, and the Copa del Rey. Each season requires a fresh beginning. The World Cup triumph is permanent, a present to France and the globe, but after acknowledging that, we return to work. Our role as parents is simplified because we don't need to motivate him."
