There is optimism within Real Madrid that Kylian Mbappé has an "outside chance" of avoiding missing any matches for the La Liga club, despite hobbling off during France's win over Türkiye on Friday evening.
Mbappé netted the only goal in a subdued 1–0 victory but was forced off shortly after that brief highlight. The 27-year-old went down clutching his left knee, which Real Madrid later diagnosed as "hyperextended," triggering serious concerns about his fitness ahead of a packed schedule of club matches.
However, scans on the affected joint have left officials in the Spanish capital "hopeful" that Mbappé will be out for approximately two weeks, The Athletic reports. Given the potential consequences of a knee injury at almost any other point in the season, Madrid can consider themselves fortunate.
What Injury Does Kylian Mbappe Have?
Mbappé has hyperextended his knee, bending it backward, apparently in the process of scoring his record-breaking 67th international goal. The Real Madrid striker received the ball on the edge of Türkiye's penalty area, cut inside from an unusual position on the left flank, and fired a sharp effort past Uğurcan Çakır with a finish inside the near post.
Whether it was an awkward placement of his standing leg while shooting or the flare-up of a pre-existing problem, Mbappé immediately pulled up gripping his left knee before medical attention ended with his substitution.
Concerns over a prolonged absence were amplified by recent troubles with the same part of his body. Mbappé injured his left knee last winter, only for Real Madrid's medical team to mistakenly scan his healthy right knee, encouraging him to continue playing. As the problem worsened with further game time, the correct leg was eventually examined and Mbappé subsequently missed back-to-back fixtures around the new year.
During that same campaign, additional knee issues forced Mbappé to sit out five Real Madrid games in the spring. However, his current absence is not anticipated to be anywhere near as prolonged.
When Will Mbappe Return From Injury for Real Madrid?
Any injury to a Barcelona or Real Madrid player is magnified when El Clásico is on the horizon. The two Spanish giants clash on Oct. 25, by which point Mbappé should have long since made his comeback.
A two-week recovery timeline has been reported across several media outlets, which could potentially see Madrid's talisman return for the club's first league fixture back against Villarreal on Saturday, Oct. 10.
That may be pushing it for Mbappé, who will undoubtedly want to be in peak condition for the Champions League away trip to Roma four days later. José Mourinho's side also face a strong Sevilla and host RB Leipzig before the high-stakes encounter at the end of next month.
Mbappé has frequently been criticized for going missing in Madrid's most important matches, yet he does boast an impressive personal record in El Clásico.
After a difficult debut in the fixture marked by eight offside calls, Mbappé struck a hat-trick the first time he faced Barcelona for Los Blancos on Catalan soil. Madrid, however, still fell 4–3. The Frenchman was on the winning side in last season's opening Clásico, scoring the opener in a 2–1 victory, but he missed the Camp Nou return leg through injury. History is not expected to repeat itself this autumn.
