Meet Mathis Albert: The American Sensation Shattering Records in the Bundesliga

When Mathis Albert took the field at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday, the Borussia Dortmund winger made history as the youngest American ever to feature in the Bundesliga.

At precisely 16 years, 11 months and five days old, Albert came on as a substitute for Maximilian Beier on the left wing in the 88th minute to help seal Dortmund's commanding 4–0 victory over Freiburg in Germany's top division. In doing so, he shattered the record previously held by U.S. national team star Gio Reyna, who made his Bundesliga debut at 17 years, two months and five days in January 2020, also with Dortmund.

USMNT icon Christian Pulisic was bumped to third on the Bundesliga list, having previously made his own landmark debut for Borussia Dortmund at 17 years, four months and 12 days in January 2016.

So who exactly is Albert, and what lies ahead for this emerging young talent?

The Future is Bright for Mathis Albert

Mathis Albert in action

Despite managing only six touches during his brief Bundesliga bow, every indication points toward an exceptional future ahead.

Surpassing the record jointly held by two USMNT players — one of whom is widely considered the finest American footballer of his generation, and both of whom are expected to represent the Stars and Stripes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer — is an extraordinary way to begin a career.

Albert's rise to professional football has been nothing short of meteoric. Born to a French father and an American mother of German heritage in Greenville, S.C., he later relocated to El Segundo, Calif. and enrolled in MLS club LA Galaxy's youth academy.

By 2022, the then-13-year-old from California had already attracted interest from Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Ajax and Paris Saint-Germain. In 2024, he acquired French and German citizenship through his parents, departing LA Galaxy to join Dortmund's youth setup.

The following year, he was representing Dortmund's first team during their quarterfinal campaign at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, having only just celebrated his 16th birthday at the time of kickoff on home soil in the U.S. Albert was the second youngest player at the entire tournament, behind Urawa Red Diamonds midfielder Takeshi Wada, though he did not make a substitute appearance.

Albert is equally making rapid strides through the international youth ranks. Although the triple national holding youngster will ultimately have his choice of senior international teams to play for, he has so far exclusively represented U.S. youth national sides.

Last winter, he made three starts and netted the decisive goal against Czechia at the 2025 Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, guiding the Stars and Stripes to a round of 32 appearance. Albert was among 20 players summoned to the Under-19 training camp last month, ahead of the squad's 4–0 triumph over Wales U19 — a significant result as the team gears up for this summer's Concacaf U-20 Championship, which serves as qualification for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, yet another global platform Albert could grace.

Albert is not in the running for USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino's final squad for this summer's showpiece tournament; however, his standing within the senior U.S. setup could look considerably different by the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, when Albert will be just 21 years of age.
