Messi Apologizes for Heated Confrontation with Atlas Player Following Dramatic Match-Winner

Lionel Messi's emotions ran high after the Inter Miami superstar orchestrated his team's decisive goal in Wednesday evening's Leagues Cup opening match against Atlas.
During the dying moments of added time, Messi delivered a pinpoint pass to a teammate for a simple finish (later validated by VAR) that secured Inter Miami's dramatic 2-1 victory.
The thrilling conclusion became even more spectacular due to Messi's post-match reactions. After the final whistle, the typically reserved World Cup champion approached Atlas striker Matías Cóccaro directly and shouted at him, with television cameras capturing Messi's passionate words to the Liga MX forward. Messi's fiery and emotional response appeared to stem from Cóccaro's celebration of Atlas' 80th-minute equalizer in front of the Inter Miami supporters earlier in the contest.
However, shortly following Messi's heated exchange, the Argentine reportedly offered an apology to Cóccaro, and the pair embraced warmly on the field, showing there were no lingering hard feelings.
Cóccaro spoke candidly with media about his brief confrontation with the legendary player:
"Immediately after we netted the equalizer, I was encouraging my teammates—we were pushing for a second goal, which explains my celebration," Cóccaro explained. "Then Inter Miami found the net again and Messi approached to celebrate directly in front of me, filled with passion. What could I do? I had to remain silent. After all, he's the greatest player ever. You simply cannot respond.
"Following the match, he approached me, embraced me, and said sorry. He was genuinely remorseful... That reveals so much about his character as a footballer. When someone of Messi's caliber addresses you, you simply listen. I hold nothing but admiration for the finest player in history."
Messi recorded two assists in Inter Miami's 2-1 triumph, marking his return following his MLS All-Star Game suspension. The 38-year-old has now accumulated 24 goals and 12 assists across 30 appearances in 2025.
