Messi Drops Major Bombshell About His 2026 World Cup Future

Lionel Messi has revealed his desire to represent Argentina in the 2026 World Cup tournament.

The Inter Miami star previously declared following Argentina's triumph against France in the 2022 final that it would mark his last World Cup participation, yet his commitment to Lionel Scaloni's squad remains unwavering as the next tournament approaches.

With a fresh three-year deal secured at Miami, Messi clearly isn't considering retirement anytime soon, though recent reports suggested he remained undecided about participating in the upcoming World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

During a recent conversation with NBC, Messi revealed that his ultimate choice will hinge on his physical condition, while expressing optimism about joining Argentina's quest to retain their championship.

"Honestly, yes, participating in a World Cup is something incredible," Messi shared. "And I would love to be there. To feel good physically and contribute meaningfully to my national team, should I participate.

"I'll evaluate this day by day when preseason begins next year with Inter and determine whether I can truly be at 100%."

Argentina's Championship Defense Motivates Messi's Ambition

Messi's passion for representing Argentina internationally, alongside teammates who regard him as their career idol, has been evident for many years.

Though this alone might convince Messi to participate next summer, the prospect of helping Argentina maintain their world champion status is also influencing his decision-making.

"I'm truly excited because it's a World Cup," Messi added. "We're the current World Cup winners, and having the opportunity to defend our title on the pitch again would be amazing because representing your country is always a dream, particularly in major tournaments, so I hope God grants me this chance once more."

Collecting trophies is familiar territory for Messi, whose incredible collection of club and international achievements is almost unbelievable, yet capturing the 2022 World Cup remains the most precious accomplishment for the 38-year-old.

"All the struggles and efforts to reach that moment—it was my lifelong dream," an emotional Messi reflected. "And everything flooded back, all the journey to get there—my family, my supporters, and Argentina."
