Messi Magic Propels Inter Miami to Leagues Cup Final Glory and Secures Historic Qualification

Lionel Messi delivered another double to propel Inter Miami to a thrilling 3–1 triumph over Orlando City on Tuesday, clinching their place in the Leagues Cup final and earning entry into next season's Concacaf Champions Cup.

The Argentine superstar had been sidelined for Miami's last two fixtures due to a hamstring problem and confessed to feeling somewhat "cautious" during the opening period, which saw Marco Pašalić put Orlando ahead in added time.

Orlando maintained their lead until David Brekalo brought down Tadeo Allende inside the penalty area in the 74th minute. The Slovenian defender received his second booking and Messi calmly converted from twelve yards. Miami's talisman felt more "relaxed" when he danced into the box with two minutes left on the clock, combining with Jordi Alba before finding the far corner.

Telasco Segovia confirmed Inter Miami's place in their second Leagues Cup final in three campaigns with a late third goal. By setting up a championship clash with Seattle Sounders, the Herons have secured at least first-round participation in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. Should Miami capture the trophy, they will advance directly to the round of 16.

Messi disclosed post-match that he was deliberately preserved for this semifinal encounter. "I was eager to return, from the Galaxy match onwards, when I experienced discomfort and felt uneasy, but I prepared specifically for this fixture because I understood its significance, against this opponent, whom we hadn't defeated in two meetings this season," the Argentine explained to Apple TV.

Miami's interim coach Javi Morales, who was deputizing for the suspended Javier Mascherano, was understandably effusive in his praise for the team captain. "We struggle to find adequate words when discussing Leo," he enthused.

"He only trained for two or three sessions and then [Wednesday] he completed the full 90 minutes and his performance level, creating opportunities, finding the net. There's nothing more to add. For us, and for our supporters, it's an honor to have him in our squad."
