Messi Makes History: Inter Miami Star Breaks Ronaldo's All-Time Goal Record with Stunning Double

While Lionel Messi may no longer compete directly with Cristiano Ronaldo on the same stage, their rivalry continues through statistical achievements and record-breaking performances.

During Saturday's match, the 38-year-old Argentine forward netted his sixth double in seven appearances for Inter Miami, leading his team to a commanding 5–1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, though it was a particular milestone that reignited comparisons with Ronaldo.

Both strikes came from regular play situations, elevating his tally to 764 non-penalty career goals, overtaking Ronaldo's 763, remarkably achieving this feat in 167 fewer professional matches.

Additionally, these goals brought his MLS season total to 18, maintaining his position in the Golden Boot race alongside Nashville SC's Sam Surridge.

Messi's performance against the Red Bulls elevated his Miami statistics to 58 goals and 26 assists across 68 appearances since his arrival in summer 2023. This record, while impressive, doesn't match Ronaldo's 93 goals and 11 assists in 105 matches for Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, though Messi has converted just two penalties for Miami versus Ronaldo's 25 spot-kicks in Saudi Arabia.

While neither player will likely contend for future Ballon d'Or honors, their historical rivalry and debate over football's greatest player continues passionately among supporters, despite the players themselves maintaining a more measured perspective.

"I hold tremendous respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and his remarkable career, which continues as he still performs at elite levels," Messi commented in June.

"Our rivalry existed on the football pitch. We each strived to excel for our respective teams. Naturally, everything remained within the game... Away from football, we're just regular individuals. We're not close friends since we don't socialize, but we've consistently shown mutual respect."

Messi will next feature with the MLS All-Stars in an exhibition match against Liga MX's finest, while Ronaldo's Al Nassr resumes Saudi Pro League competition in August.
