Messi Makes History with Milestone Goal as Inter Miami Dominates Concacaf Champions Cup

Lionel Messi reached a milestone achievement on Wednesday evening, netting a goal in Inter Miami's Concacaf Champions Cup clash with Nashville SC to achieve 900 career goals since his professional debut in October 2004 with FC Barcelona. He becomes just the second footballer in history to accomplish this remarkable feat.

Following three goals in his previous three matches, the eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient maintained his scoring form, quickly finding the net once again on Wednesday during the round of 16 second leg encounter.

Inter Miami's Sergio Reguilón delivered the ball across the penalty area to Messi's feet, who unleashed a left-footed strike into the goal to break the deadlock in the seventh minute of play.

The 38-year-old Messi joins his former La Liga adversary Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, as the only two players in football history to reach this milestone. Messi achieved 900 goals across 1,142 total matches, excluding friendly games. Al Nassr's Ronaldo currently sits at 965 goals from 1,312 appearances.

Nevertheless, Messi's 407 assists compared to Ronaldo's 261 gives him the edge over the former Real Madrid icon in overall goal contributions.

The triumph also elevated Messi's Inter Miami tally to 81 goals and 44 assists across 93 matches, extending his exceptional performance following a 29-goal, 20-assist 2025 regular season campaign, which earned him his second straight MLS MVP Award and inaugural MLS Golden Boot.

"[I am] a privileged observer, nothing more, nothing less," Miami head coach Javier Mascherano commented before the MLS fixture against D.C. United, where Messi scored his 899th goal in a 2–1 victory. "I haven't played a significant role in his goal-scoring, neither through assists nor now as his manager. I've been fortunate to witness most, or many, of his goals from much closer than all of you, and that's truly special. The figure we're discussing [900] is extraordinary, and that's what makes Leo unique."
