Messi Makes MLS History with Unprecedented Goalscoring Milestone

Lionel Messi etched his name in MLS record books during Inter Miami's 2–1 triumph over New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.

The Argentinian superstar became the inaugural MLS athlete to net multiple goals across four straight regular-season contests. Messi has successfully scored twice in each of his previous four league outings versus Montréal, Columbus Crew, Montréal once more, and most recently, New England Revolution.

Messi broke the deadlock in Foxborough during the 27th minute, taking advantage of Tanner Beason's wayward header within his own penalty area. The ball landed perfectly for the Inter Miami striker, who powerfully dispatched it into the goal.

Merely nine minutes afterward, Sergio Busquets delivered an exceptional through pass to locate a charging Messi, who finished with a first-touch, left-footed shot to extend the Herons' lead to 2–0.

The record-setting strike from Messi marked his 52nd goal while wearing the pink jersey. The former Barcelona icon has scored in seven of his most recent nine MLS fixtures.

Messi's current hot streak has assisted a faltering Inter Miami in revitalizing their 2025 MLS season. The Herons have accumulated 13 points across their previous five contests and currently trail Eastern Conference frontrunners Cincinnati by just seven points, despite having three games in hand due to their FIFA Club World Cup participation.

While Javier Mascherano's squad was eliminated from this summer's expanded tournament in the round of 16 after a 4–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, they still achieved historic milestones. Inter Miami remained the sole MLS team to reach the knockout phase and also established themselves as the first Concacaf organization to overcome a European rival in official competition.

The premature elimination allowed the Herons to redirect their attention toward their domestic season as they strive to retain their Supporters' Shield and capture the franchise's inaugural MLS Cup.
