Messi Reveals His 2026 World Cup Plans: "Taking It Day by Day" Following Argentina's Latest Victory

Messi Reveals His 2026 World Cup Plans: "Taking It Day by Day" Following Argentina's Latest Victory

Lionel Messi might have competed in his final competitive home game for Argentina during Thursday evening's commanding 3–0 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory over Venezuela, though uncertainty surrounds his future with both his national squad and professional club.

Despite the 38-year-old netting twice in the triumph and becoming emotional before devoted fans, many of whom were bidding farewell to him in Argentina's iconic colors, he offered no assurances regarding next summer's competition across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In the past, Messi has questioned his participation in the tournament, declaring his World Cup career finished following Argentina's 2022 victory in Qatar. Nevertheless, his impressive performances in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, combined with his ongoing excellence for the national team, demonstrate the abilities that could still prove valuable at the 2026 competition.

"I maintain what I've previously stated: I don't believe I'll participate in the upcoming World Cup. Considering my age, it's most reasonable to assume it won't occur. I'm enthusiastic and motivated, but I'm approaching it one day at a time, one game at a time," Messi expressed in Spanish during his post-game comments.

"I'll proceed as I have been, taking each day as it comes, attempting to maintain good form, and most importantly, staying true to myself. When I feel strong, I embrace it. If I'm not performing well, it troubles me and I'd prefer not to participate. We'll see.

"I haven't reached a conclusion regarding the World Cup."

The competition is scheduled to commence on June 10, 2026, with Mexico beginning at the Estadio Azteca against an adversary to be decided during the World Cup Draw in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 5.

While the World Cup draw approaches on Dec. 5, Messi's attention centers on the upcoming months with Inter Miami, aspiring to compete in his inaugural MLS Cup final on Dec. 6, particularly with his current deal expiring at season's end.

Nevertheless, the legendary number 10 offered clues about what 2026 might bring, referencing the 2026 preseason as part of his World Cup preparation strategy.

"The reality is, nine months [before the World Cup] pass very rapidly, yet simultaneously, it represents a considerable period," he explained, amid speculation about an approaching contract renewal. "We conclude our campaign at year's end, and hopefully we can claim the MLS championship. Then preseason arrives, and I'll have six months remaining. I'll assess how I'm feeling."

Messi will skip Argentina's trip to Ecuador to conclude World Cup qualifying, referencing the volume of matches he's played for both club and country. Nevertheless, he'll likely return to action for Inter Miami against Charlotte FC on Sept. 13 as they begin their final nine MLS regular-season contests before the MLS Cup Playoffs.
