Messi Shatters Pele's Legendary Record as Inter Miami Cruises to Victory

Inter Miami skipper Lionel Messi netted his 71st career free-kick goal over the weekend, moving past Brazilian icon Pelé in football's record books.

The Herons found themselves down 2–1 to New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Sunday when Messi once more carried his team. The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient approached the set piece and unleashed a free kick that defeated U.S. men's national team keeper Matt Freese to level the match in the 61st minute.

It may not have been the most spectacular free kick of Messi's distinguished career—the shot required a lucky deflection to reach the goal, and Freese probably could have done more to prevent it—but it created history all the same.

The Argentine has now converted more free kicks than Pelé, securing another personal milestone in his collection. Even at 38 years old, Messi continues to be among football's most dangerous set-piece takers.

Inter Miami proceeded to claim a 3–2 triumph over NYCFC, courtesy of a decisive strike from newcomer Micael. The reigning MLS Cup holders occupy third place in the Eastern Conference, tied with Pascal Jansen's squad on 10 points and three behind Nashville SC.

Messi Still Chasing More History

While surpassing Pelé, Messi still has another Brazilian to overcome before claiming the title for most free kicks scored in history. Juninho Pernambucano currently holds that distinction with 77.

Messi must therefore convert six additional free kicks to match Juninho and seven to claim outright ownership of the record.

The Argentine is undoubtedly in the final phase of his storied career, but he retains numerous chances to reach Juninho. With almost a full MLS season remaining, this summer's World Cup and two additional years on his Inter Miami deal, Messi could achieve the climb to 77—provided he maintains his fitness.

Javier Mascherano: Miami's Goals Are 'Impossible' Without Messi

Inter Miami desperately required a victory over the weekend following their elimination from the Concacaf Champions Cup in the round of 16. Capturing that tournament had been the club's primary objective for 2026.

Messi delivered in the matchup, netting the team's sole goal over both legs against Nashville. Indeed, the Barcelona icon has scored five of the Herons' 10 goals in all competitions this campaign.

Javier Mascherano openly praised his compatriot following his display in the club's victory over NYCFC.

"Obviously, he is an essential player for us to accomplish our targets," the Argentine manager stated about Messi. "Honestly, without him, reaching the goals we've established would be impossible."

Although no longer contending for the Concacaf Champions Cup, Inter Miami maintains ambitions of capturing the Leagues Cup and MLS Cup in 2026, both of which would be unattainable without Messi spearheading their efforts.
