Messi's India Visit Erupts in Chaos as Fans Clash in Violent Street Riots

Lionel Messi launched his GOAT Tour in Kolkata, India on Friday, but what should have been a celebratory occasion descended into mayhem as thousands of supporters stormed the field and damaged the Salt Lake Stadium—expressing their anger over the event's inadequate organization.

The reveal of a 70-foot statue was intended to be the main attraction for the tour's opening. Messi arrived at the venue with Inter Miami colleagues Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez, heavily protected by security staff, which prevented attendees from getting a proper view of their idol.

Inadequate planning led to Messi failing to complete even one full circuit of the stadium before departing early, exiting the field after just 20 minutes, according to BBC Sport.

Supporter enthusiasm rapidly transformed into rage, creating chaotic and hazardous situations as fans stormed the field, destroyed seating, hurled items and caused additional damage to the venue.

Admission prices reached 12,000 rupees (£100, $133) but many felt cheated since only dignitaries, celebrities and an enlarged security team managed to get close to Messi.

"Only officials and entertainers were near Messi ... Why invite us then?" an attendee told Indian media outlet ANI. "I spent Rs 5,000 on my ticket and brought my son to see Messi, not politicians.

"The police and military staff were taking photos and the organizers are responsible."

Following the disorder at Salt Lake Stadium, regional chief minister Mamata Banerjee released a social media statement apologizing for the incidents.

"I am profoundly troubled and stunned by the poor organization witnessed today at Salt Lake Stadium," Banerjee stated. "I was traveling to the stadium to participate in the event alongside thousands of sports enthusiasts and supporters who had assembled to see their beloved footballer, Lionel Messi.

"I genuinely apologize to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports enthusiasts and his supporters, for this regrettable incident. I am establishing an investigation committee [that] will conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident, assign accountability, and suggest measures to avoid such situations in the future.

"Once more, I offer my sincere apologies to all sports enthusiasts."

Messi's four-day journey is scheduled to take him to Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, but the disgraceful events at the tour's opening venue will certainly raise concerns about the upcoming festivities.
