Messi's MLS Debut in Jeopardy as Inter Miami Star Battles Injury Ahead of Season Opener

Lionel Messi faces uncertainty for Inter Miami's MLS season kickoff against LAFC on February 21st following a hamstring injury suffered during their preseason encounter with Barcelona SC.

The Argentine superstar netted his opening goal of the year before departing the field after 58 minutes, observing the match's conclusion from the sidelines.

On Wednesday, Miami released an official statement detailing the extent of Messi's condition, casting doubt over his availability for the fixture at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

"Messi was absent from Wednesday's training session on Feb. 11 due to a muscular strain in his left hamstring suffered during the Barcelona SC match in Ecuador, which has continued to persist," the club announced.

"The athlete underwent further medical evaluations that validated the diagnosis. His progressive return to practice will be determined by his clinical and functional development over the upcoming days."

The timing of Messi's hamstring setback couldn't be more problematic, with Miami just days away from launching their MLS championship defense in their rapidly approaching season debut.

Historical patterns offer little optimism for the Herons. Messi experienced a comparable injury in August and was sidelined for two matches, returning after 11 days only to worsen the problem and miss an additional two contests.

Regardless of Messi's status, the Herons will travel to BMO Field for their official appearance as reigning MLS champions. The same cannot be said for Miami's final preseason exhibition, a fixture that has been altered due to Messi's recent injury complications.

Messi and Miami had planned to journey to Puerto Rico for a showdown with Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in their preseason "Champions Tour" finale on February 13th.

Just ten minutes following Miami's injury confirmation, the club issued another announcement stating the Puerto Rico friendly has been delayed and rescheduled for February 26th.

"The organization, working alongside the event organizer and Puerto Rico's government, believes postponing the match will provide the optimal experience for Puerto Rican supporters," the announcement stated.

Messi was directly quoted in the release, with the World Cup winner offering perspective on his current fitness concerns.

"Regrettably, I experienced some muscular discomfort in our recent match," Messi explained. "However, we were genuinely excited to see you, so alongside the club we collaborated to identify an alternative date that allows us to visit and compete in Puerto Rico. We understand the enthusiasm and anticipation you have for an Inter Miami game, and it will be truly meaningful to make this happen shortly."

The anticipation is that Messi will be fit for the rescheduled date, representing his inaugural appearance on Puerto Rican territory. The match time, opposition, and venue originally planned for the friendly will stay the same.
