Messi's Return to Inter Miami Hangs in Balance Following Injury Concerns

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano addressed questions regarding Lionel Messi's fitness status before Thursday evening's FIFA Club World Cup encounter with Porto, confirming that his star player is ready for action.

The 37-year-old forward had been subject to injury speculation for the upcoming fixture, particularly after footage emerged of him appearing to favor his leg during a practice session. However, Mascherano, during his pre-game press conference, dismissed any worries about the eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient's availability.

"I noticed that this topic was being discussed in various outlets. But absolutely not, there's nothing wrong. He is perfectly fine," Mascherano stated. "He participated in training, and most crucially, his performance in training was excellent.

"In fact, we were having a conversation precisely when I observed that the cameras captured him touching his leg. It's completely insignificant. Nothing whatsoever. Sometimes people simply adjust themselves, correct? But no, there was no incident. He's in good shape. And naturally, he will feature in the match."

Messi completed the entire 90-minute contest when Inter Miami kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 0–0 draw against Egypt's Al Ahly on June 15. Messi's squad controlled more of the ball (55% vs. 45%) and registered more attempts (14 vs. 11), but created fewer clear-cut opportunities as classified by Fotmob (3 vs. 5). Al Ahly also generated superior xG figures—1.98, compared to Miami's 0.87, indicating they should have secured victory.

Porto similarly drew 0–0 with Palmeiras in Group A's other opening fixture, meaning everything remains at stake for Matchday 2. Should Miami secure victory against the Portuguese club on Thursday, it would enhance their chances of also defeating Palmeiras on Matchday 3 to advance comfortably to the knockout phase.
