Mexico Clashes with Japan: Your Complete Guide to Catching the International Friendly Live

Mexico approaches the concluding phase of its 2026 FIFA World Cup buildup with a friendly encounter against Japan.

El Tri triumphed over the USMNT in July's Gold Cup championship match, marking their last competitive fixture before hosting the opening game of next summer's World Cup. Javier Aguirre's team now has only exhibition matches scheduled moving forward.

The roster Mexico will field for the September friendlies closely resembles the squad that competed in the Gold Cup. It's evident that Aguirre has already formed a solid understanding of what the World Cup lineup will entail, making this an opportunity for borderline players to make an impression and secure some of the remaining positions for next summer's tournament.

Japan will provide quality opposition. Hajime Moriyasu's squad became the first team outside the host nations to secure their World Cup berth. With numerous players from established European clubs making the journey to the U.S. for this friendly, Mexico faces a challenging encounter.

Here's Sports Illustrated's viewing guide.
