Mexico's Captain Faces Explosive Legal Crisis as Fraud and Kidnapping Charges Rock National Team

Mexico national team captain Edson Álvarez is facing accusations of fraud and alleged involvement in a kidnapping scheme.

Producer and filmmaker Juan José López Ordóñez claims Álvarez played a role in a kidnapping plot organized by the player's former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla. López alleges he was held captive for approximately six hours by armed individuals he believes were dispatched by Toache on Nov. 3, 2024. He says he was subjected to violent beatings and threats during the ordeal.

According to López, the kidnapping stemmed from Toache's attempt to avoid fulfilling a financial obligation tied to a real estate business deal. López also alleges the incident was partly intended to help Álvarez escape a financial commitment he had agreed to for the production of a documentary chronicling his football career.

López claims he is owed $206,000 (3.5 million Mexican pesos) by Álvarez for work completed on the documentary, which began production in 2022 but was never completed.

López's attorney announced on Monday that legal proceedings have already been initiated, including criminal complaints against Álvarez for fraud and kidnapping, according to Latinus. Additional criminal complaints against Álvarez related to threats made toward López are currently being prepared, and the investigation remains active.

Edson Álvarez 'Categorically Rejects' Criminal Allegations

López first went public with his claims against Álvarez in an interview with Mexican outlet TVNotas on Sept. 9, before appearing alongside his attorney before assembled media on Monday to reaffirm his allegations. Álvarez then broke his silence with a detailed statement posted to social media.

"In light of the publications and statements that have circulated recently, I believe it is necessary to address this matter clearly and firmly," Álvarez wrote. "I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me.

"Over recent months, my name and image have repeatedly been exploited to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me. Until now, I had chosen to remain silent. However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line."

"I will not allow my name to be used to fuel disputes between third parties or to gain media exposure," Álvarez added. "Therefore, given the gravity of the statements that have been made, I have directed my legal team to evaluate and pursue appropriate legal action against any individual who makes or spreads false allegations against me.

"I also want to be clear regarding the publications that have attempted to link me to this matter through my former partner's father: It is not my place to confirm, deny, or comment on what may be said about third parties, but it is my responsibility to make one thing absolutely clear: I have no connection whatsoever to the events being reported."

"My priority is and will always remain where it has always been: with my daughters, my family, and my professional career," Álvarez concluded.

The criminal allegations only add to what has already been the most turbulent period of Álvarez's career. The 28-year-old failed to secure a transfer away from West Ham United despite his desire to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo effectively sidelined Álvarez as he sought an exit from the club. Now stranded at West Ham, Álvarez has not featured in any of the team's first seven Championship season fixtures, with his last appearance coming in the Carabao Cup on Aug. 8.

Álvarez endured a difficult loan spell at Fenerbahçe the previous season. Between injuries and inconsistent performances, he has managed only six club appearances in 2026. Nevertheless, he made the same number of appearances for Mexico over the summer, including four matches at the 2026 World Cup.

Now, however, with no playing time and the criminal allegations hanging over him, it has been widely reported that Álvarez will be left out of Rafael Márquez's Mexico squad for the September international window, during which El Tri is scheduled to play four friendly matches.

During his appearance before journalists on Monday, López stated he wished to "clarify and emphasize" that it is not his intention to bring Álvarez's career to an end.
