Michael Carrick Breaks Character with Surprising Response to Man Utd Fan's Haircut Wait

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick set aside his usual serious demeanor to grin about the possibility of witnessing Frank Ilett finally getting a trim.

Ilett, better recognized as the United Strand, began a mission of avoiding haircuts until United achieved five consecutive victories starting on Oct. 5, 2024. Erik ten Hag was leading the team at that time and had just experienced a four-game stretch without wins.

Following five different managers, temporary leaders and interim coaches, 77 fixtures and 493 days later, United are just one victory from making the clippers necessary. Carrick's hiring has sparked this run and the typically restrained former player revealed his playful side when questioned about Ilett's hair situation.

"I can confirm I know about it," Carrick grinned bashfully during his media session before Tuesday evening's match against West Ham United. "My children have informed me about it more than anything, but it definitely won't be mentioned in the team briefing, from a professional standpoint.

"However I can appreciate what's happening with it and it does amuse me, but it won't influence anything in the final analysis."

What Haircut Will the United Strand Get?

What Haircut Will the United Strand Get?

Ilett's present hairstyle resembles Manchester United's formation under Ruben Amorim; filled with clumsy angles that go nowhere. The strategy is straightforward: "Begin anew."

"Initially it needs to be removed in sections and likely buzzed completely and restarted," he shared with Sky Sports News.

"It's been incredible since [Carrick] initially arrived. I'm pleased as well it hasn't been five simple opponents either, we defeated [Manchester] City and Arsenal and even Spurs and Fulham can be challenging to overcome on their best days."

Previously in September, when Amorim was still awaiting back-to-back Premier League wins, Ilett had some bold plans for the momentous occasion. "There's nothing definite yet, some discussions. But, my perfect scenario would be getting it trimmed at Old Trafford by one of the squad members," he shared with talkSPORT. Bruno Fernandes can be removed from the potential barber candidates.

Manchester United's skipper showed no enthusiasm for the online phenomenon when the subject came up following Saturday's easy win against Tottenham Hotspur. "No, no, I need to schedule for myself," Fernandes responded sharply when asked about organizing a haircut for Ilett. "I don't really observe other people if they need to visit the salon. That's not significant to me."

Fernandes isn't alone in dismissing Ilett's commitment. One Manchester United supporter notably attacked the minor celebrity during a 2–1 victory over Chelsea this season and there have been widespread claims that Ilett has profited from his new recognition through profitable endorsements.

"I'm certainly not the wealthy person that some believe I am," Ilett shared with SunSport. "There's been much discussion about earning millions, but that's not accurate.

"It's not as lucrative as some assume. But that wasn't my motivation for beginning it initially."

According to Ilett himself, he "began the challenge for entertainment, to attempt spreading some laughter and happiness into the world." Now he plans to utilize his increased visibility for positive purposes.

"I'm thrilled the challenge has resonated with so many individuals and supporters of all teams have united to form an incredible, uplifting community," he posted on his JustGiving fundraising page for the Little Princess Trust, an organization that supports pediatric cancer research and supplies complimentary wigs created from real hair.

"After previously fundraising for Mind UK, I would now like to assist another charity, The Little Princess Trust," Ilett stated. "The intention is to contribute my hair to them when the challenge ends (if it meets length and quality requirements!), but regardless I would love to generate funds for them as they perform wonderful work!"

Before Tuesday's match, Ilett had collected over £6,000 ($8,200).
