Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says he is eager to discover which players in his squad are "really there" as the club battles through a difficult start to the campaign.
Sunday's 1–1 stalemate against Tottenham Hotspur left United with their worst opening to a top-flight season in four decades, and the pressure shows no sign of easing as the Red Devils gear up to face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
A win over Sabah on Sept. 10 in the opening round of Champions League group play was one of only two victories United have managed this season, and Carrick's men now face the prospect of going five matches without a win ahead of a tough away fixture at the Metropolitano.

"I actually enjoy this part — sometimes when things aren't going your way, you find out who's really there. You see it within the group, the players, the squad, the club — who's truly committed and who wants to be here for the long haul," Carrick said at his pre-match press conference.
"[You see who is] genuinely invested in it and [who it] truly means something [to].
"The fans are right behind us — they're desperate for results — and we have to deliver for them. I think you have to embrace the tough moments to reach where you want to go. We're right in the thick of it now, but I fully believe we'll find our way through."
When Was the Last Time Man Utd Went Five Games Without a Win?

This current rough patch stands in stark contrast to the momentum Carrick built during his first six months in charge, when an impressive second half of the 2025–26 season had many wondering why United had waited so long to appoint him as permanent manager.
United never suffered more than a two-game winless run during Carrick's caretaker spell, but the club has now well surpassed that unwanted mark and is fighting hard to avoid a five-game stretch without a positive result.
Going five matches without a win may seem almost unthinkable for a club of United's stature, but the reality is that the Red Devils' inconsistent form over recent years means such a dismal run is not entirely unfamiliar territory for the players.
