Heading into his first complete season at the helm of Manchester United, Michael Carrick is setting his sights high, stating he believes his squad has "what it takes" to challenge for "every trophy available" in 2026–27.
The former United midfielder stepped in as caretaker manager in January, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim after a rocky 14-month tenure at the club. Under Carrick's guidance, the team dramatically turned their fortunes around, comfortably booking their spot in the Champions League with a third-place finish.
As a reward for his efforts, Carrick was handed a two-year deal to become the Red Devils' full-time manager. With his position secured and buoyed by such an impressive run of form, Carrick is now focused on restoring United's storied standards and guiding them to their first Premier League crown since 2013.
"We know we've got what it takes to beat the best teams in this league," Carrick wrote in a note to supporters featured in the club's official yearbook. "Now it's about doing that over a full Premier League campaign, while also fighting for every trophy available to us.
"We've got a fantastic group of players, and we believe they have the required standards of talent, commitment and determination to be successful here. They love being at the club, and we can see how badly they want it; that gives us the confidence to know we're really building something and moving in the right direction.
"I cannot wait to lead the group forward next season and for those special European nights to return to Old Trafford. We are ready to kick on and give you more of the great moments that United are all about."
Man Utd's Resurgence Under Michael Carrick

No Premier League side claimed more victories than United's 12 from the moment Carrick took over from Amorim in the dugout.
They suffered just two defeats across the 17 matches Carrick oversaw in 2025–26, and no Premier League club found the net more often than their 33 goals during that stretch. The Red Devils were sitting sixth in the table when Amorim departed. With Carrick orchestrating the revival, they ultimately sealed Champions League qualification with two matches to spare.
"During the first few days after I returned to the club, myself and the coaching staff talked to the players about the huge opportunity we all have to represent Manchester United, which means so much to so many people, and the importance of embracing the challenge of playing for our club. The players certainly did that and more, and we can be really proud of the progress the group has made over the last few months.
"We know that we need to keep improving. We have a huge responsibility here to win and play exciting football. That never changes, and we should always be striving to compete for the biggest trophies. There are steps to take, but we are in a good place to take them."

Man Utd Still Working on Improving Squad

To accomplish the ambitious targets Carrick has outlined, United have considerable work ahead during the summer transfer window. The manager has faith in the existing talent at his disposal, but reinforcements are clearly necessary—particularly given the added demands of European competition.
Strengthening the midfield is a top priority, with Casemiro appearing set to join Inter Miami. A deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Éderson is already in place and nearing completion. However, the work to bolster that area of the pitch is far from over.
After being priced out of a move for Mateus Fernandes, United appear to be targeting an even bigger name, with Real Madrid and France international Aurélien Tchouaméni emerging as a key objective. Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Chelsea's Andrey Santos have also been mentioned as potential arrivals at Old Trafford.

The majority of United's transfer activity this window is centered on a midfield overhaul. Nevertheless, addressing other areas including goalkeeper, left back, and left winger has also been identified as part of the summer agenda.
There remains plenty of time for further moves to develop during the window, and United are expected to remain busy in the market.
