Michael Carrick Unveils Secret Behind Kobbie Mainoo's Stunning Man Utd Breakthrough
Michael Carrick maintains he hasn't needed to extensively coach Kobbie Mainoo back to peak performance at Manchester United, as the player's inherent ability has enabled him to reintegrate into the team with just "a few guidance points."
Mainoo has been named in the starting lineup for all five Premier League matches under Carrick's management, after failing to secure a league start under previous manager Ruben Amorim since May 2025. The former manager criticized English football supporters for excessive praise of Mainoo, though Carrick considers the enthusiasm around the 20-year-old to be warranted.
"I've been familiar with Kobbie for an extended period," he shared with BBC Sport. "I began working alongside him when he was approximately 13 or 14 years old, during my early coaching certification days—several years back. Just minor involvement.
"Then, naturally, during my initial stint here, he was occasionally present. So I believe understanding him and having that history with him, witnessing his performances at such elite levels in significant matches
"What Kobbie has accomplished at such a tender age is truly remarkable. We sometimes overlook just how youthful he remains. I was simply an admirer watching him compete and understanding his capabilities. Therefore, selecting him wasn't a difficult choice. And honestly, it's challenging when you haven't been playing regularly to rediscover your tempo and regain your sharpness."

"My sole focus is victory," Amorim stated near the conclusion of his United management. "I don't consider individual identities, that's irrelevant to me, I'm simply attempting to field the strongest possible team."
Amorim consistently claimed he would gladly utilize Mainoo if he believed the 20-year-old would contribute to team success. The issue was his infrequent belief in that scenario, maintaining a 3-4-2-1 setup that placed Mainoo in direct competition with team captain Bruno Fernandes for playing time. He stood no realistic chance in that contest, and Amorim's unwillingness to alter tactics condemned Mainoo to substitute appearances.

Among Carrick's most significant modifications at United has been tactical restructuring. The three-defender system has been abandoned, with a 4-2-3-1 formation repositioning Fernandes in his optimal role while creating a defensive midfield position that Mainoo has embraced enthusiastically.
Predictably, Mainoo has performed admirably, returning to the standards he displayed during his emergence under Erik ten Hag, under whose guidance 38 of his 44 appearances were as a starter.
Carrick has experienced an immediate positive effect, admitting he has barely had opportunity to formally coach Mainoo so far. Instead, the emphasis has been on restoring the youngster's match fitness after extended periods on the bench.
"There are aspects he can develop, areas for enhancement, but we haven't really begun addressing those because we're allowing him to rediscover his natural flow and playing rhythm," Carrick explained.
"I've been deliberately careful not to overwhelm him—just a few minor suggestions, some positional guidance and small details here and there—but have faith in his natural ability. He's an exceptional player with tremendous talent."
Faith—something Amorim was unable to demonstrate toward Mainoo.

The Carrick tenure remains in its infancy, yet Mainoo is already demonstrating his value, featuring in every minute of the new manager's opening five matches and illustrating precisely why numerous supporters encouraged Amorim to provide him with genuine opportunities.
Moving forward, Mainoo must demonstrate he merits retaining that central role and win over whoever assumes control of the Old Trafford technical area next season—possibly Carrick himself.
"I'm present to fulfill my responsibilities now and create a competitive team while achieving success," Carrick declared.
"I don't determine the duration of my tenure, but I enjoy being here and during my time, I'll contribute everything possible. I consistently plan with long-term club benefits in mind. That's my fundamental belief."
