Arsenal's victory over Lille in the Champions League brought an additional boost for the defending Premier League champions on Tuesday: Michael Olise received a red card while playing for Bayern Munich.
The French winger was sent off for the first time in his professional career, collecting two yellow cards in quick succession during Bayern's difficult evening in Norway. Olise anticipated the first booking after a minor foul halted Viking's counter-attacking opportunity.
However, he then hurled the ball at Viking captain Zlatko Tripić, resulting in an instant second yellow card in the 74th minute. Bayern, who had taken a 3–2 lead just moments earlier, were abruptly reduced to 10 men and eventually conceded a stoppage-time equalizer.
Vincent Kompany's squad had to be content with a draw, but the repercussions extended further. Olise is now banned for Bayern's upcoming Champions League fixture against Arsenal on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
It's a disastrous situation for the reigning German champions, yet a fortunate development for the Gunners.
Arsenal Looking to Extend Sublime League Phase Record

Had Eberechi Eze and Gabriel converted their penalties back in May, Arsenal would finally be celebrating a Champions League trophy. Instead, they must settle for an extraordinary run of results to their name.
The current English champions have claimed victory in their last 14 league phase matches. Mikel Arteta's squad wrapped up the 2024–25 league phase with four straight wins, went unbeaten throughout last season, and have now kicked off 2026–27 with back-to-back victories against Napoli and Lille.
Among Arsenal's eight wins last campaign was a triumph over Bayern. The Gunners claimed a commanding 3–1 home victory over the German club, delivering sweet revenge following Bayern's elimination of Arsenal in the 2023–24 quarterfinals.
To reach 15 consecutive league phase wins, last season's Champions League finalists will need to overcome a Bayern side boasting one of Europe's most dangerous attacks. Yet so much of their offensive output relies on the creativity and left foot of Olise, who will now be sidelined as a spectator.
This is welcome news for Arteta's squad. They haven't appeared as commanding as they did last season recently, suffering a 3–0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion before narrowly edging Leeds United 2–1 at the weekend. Their 3–0 win over Lille was also far less convincing than the final score implied.
Harry Kane Speaks Out on Olise's Needless Red Card

Losing one of their key players ahead of such a high-profile clash with Arsenal was the last thing Bayern needed. Olise is coming off a remarkable second season in which he registered 22 goals and 26 assists across 52 appearances.
The 24-year-old then delivered a record seven assists for France at this summer's World Cup, earning a nomination for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. Olise has maintained his blistering form in 2026–27, contributing eight goals and three assists in nine appearances for Bayern.
Without him available, the burden will fall on Harry Kane and his teammates to lead the attack. The skipper addressed Olise's dismissal, carefully balancing frustration with measured diplomacy.
"He'll have to take responsibility obviously, he'll have to learn from it," Kane said following the match. "It's a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now, and he's going to be gutted to miss those games.
"But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen; it's life."
