What Are the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge Events?

MLS All-Star competition

The skills competition features players battling in five distinct events, with different participant selections for each. Each of the initial four individual events contributes one point toward a team's total score, determining the Skills Challenge champion.

Previous season saw Liga MX triumph over MLS in the skills competition.

Shooting Challenge

The shooting challenge represents one of five events where MLS and Liga MX players will compete on Tuesday evening. Each squad selects three players to target 12 objectives with varying values within 60 seconds.

Values range from two points, five points, or 10 points, with a mobile target appearing in the final 20 seconds worth 20 points.

Three rounds will occur, with teams alternating each round, and the squad achieving the challenge victory with highest points earns one point toward the overall MLS All-Star Skills Challenge tally.

Touch Challenge

Beyond the shooting challenge, players tackle the touch challenge to evaluate their ball control, utilizing eight players from each squad.

Four players participate per round, featuring two distributors and two recipients, competing across two 90-second periods. The challenge examines first touch, with balls delivered by teammates or a ball-launcher, positioning the receiver to control and distribute each of 15 balls into a skeeball-style target with different values.

Similar to other challenges, the team finishing with highest points secures one point for their overall tally.

Cross & Volley Challenge

The cross and volley challenge returns to the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge featuring eight players per team in an assessment of technique, control and finishing ability.

Participants include two distributors, one shooter and an opposing goalkeeper, competing through two 60-second rounds. In this event, players accumulate points based on style, with bicycle kicks worth 20 points, one-touch volleys worth 15 points, 10 points for controlled touch and goal, and five points for half volleys.

Passing Challenge

The All-Star Passing Challenge presents three rounds of 1-v-1 contests, featuring three players per team, in 60-second rounds each.

Targets are positioned throughout the field as players rush to topple four targets with passes, earning points for their respective squads. If both achieve identical target numbers after 60 seconds, whoever hits the final target first claims the point.

Crossbar Challenge

Among the most beloved challenges in soccer training, the crossbar challenge takes center stage at the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge.

Each team fields seven players, including all four goalkeepers simultaneously in one round with alternating attempts. Players position in Zone 1 at the penalty area's edge and must strike the crossbar five times to access Zone 2, positioned farther from goal.

Subsequently, teams attempt The Victory Shot from Zone 2 to conclude the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge.
