MLS Club Emerges as Frontrunner in Fierce Battle to Land Mohamed Salah

With his involvement with Egypt at the World Cup now behind him, attention has turned to where Mohamed Salah will continue his career following his Liverpool departure—and reports indicate that his top destination in MLS, if he decides to move to the United States, is currently Sporting Kansas City.

The Athletic's report highlights the challenge MLS clubs face in persuading Salah to turn down the financial allure of the Saudi Pro League, along with his preference to remain in Europe if possible. However, following a landmark summer World Cup on American soil—which proved that nothing is off the table—several MLS sides are refusing to abandon their pursuit.

Sporting KC are reportedly in "pole position" for Salah at this point, with the World Cup no longer occupying the 34-year-old's attention following Egypt's dramatic and—in the view of their coaching staff—contentious elimination at the hands of defending champions Argentina.

The Exit That Stunned Liverpool's Supporters

Arne Slot, Mohamed Salah

Salah's exit from Liverpool a full year before his contract was set to expire sent shockwaves across the football world, though it wasn't entirely surprising to those following the situation closely.

Salah had clashed with then-manager Arne Slot, who was dismissed at the end of the 2025–26 campaign, and publicly claimed he had been "thrown under the bus" amid the club's extended run of poor results. From Salah's perspective, he had been made a scapegoat for the team's struggles without receiving backing from those at the top of the club.

Despite speculation that Salah could depart as early as January, he ultimately remained at Liverpool through the end of the season, eventually reclaiming his spot in the starting lineup.

Nevertheless, the end was clearly approaching for Salah, who confirmed in March that his storied time at Anfield—during which he became a two-time Premier League champion, a Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup winner, and a record four-time Premier League Golden Boot recipient—was drawing to a close.

Is MLS Realistically an Option for Salah?

Salah still believes he has plenty to contribute at the highest level of European football, though whether elite clubs are willing to invest in the veteran winger remains an open question.

On his best days, Salah still possesses the qualities that once made him among the finest players on the planet. However, his reduced pace and limited defensive contribution were factors in Slot's decision to drop him from Liverpool's lineup, and his influence in high-stakes matches had noticeably faded. Top clubs will struggle to overlook those concerns, which explains the absence of interest from the Premier League or La Liga.

Turkey has been floated as a possible destination for Salah, with several of the country's leading clubs able to offer attractive wages. Yet the chance to play a central role in growing the sport—whether in the Saudi Pro League or MLS, where Salah would command superstar status—is something that aligns with his broader sporting ambitions.

Sporting KC's new majority owner, Peter Mallouk, has publicly pledged greater financial investment in the club, and as the son of Egyptian immigrants, he shares a cultural connection with Salah that could prove persuasive. The club also has room for an additional Designated Player (DP) on their roster, alongside Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia.

The Saudi Pro League has yet to formally approach Salah, though it would be surprising if their interest hasn't been communicated in some form by now. MLS clubs will be hoping that the success of the World Cup across the U.S., Mexico and Canada can help offset the financial pull of the Middle East, and that landing Salah could help propel the league to unprecedented new heights.
