Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber has expressed that Harry Kane's interest in potentially joining MLS one day represents "the fulfillment of a dream."
Kane recently disclosed his desire to explore the possibility of eventually becoming an NFL kicker "a bit more seriously." The Bayern Munich forward acknowledged that this potential career path hinges on various factors, but noted that a move to MLS would align well with his ambitious long-term aspirations.
A strong case can be made that Kane is currently the finest player on the planet—undoubtedly the most complete and effective striker in the game. For Garber, the England international simply referencing MLS as a possible destination carries enormous significance.
"I'd love for him to do that," Garber said regarding Kane's NFL ambitions, via ESPN. "I think, for me, it is the fulfillment of the dream that we had to build a proper soccer league that would drive a soccer nation. That sounds colloquial but actually we have that written down.
"We wanted to create something that would have the Harry Kanes of the world say 'I'd kind of like to play in MLS.' And I think Messi proved that. That was a competitive process, working to ensure that we had a dynamic that would be better than going back to Barça, working a dynamic that would not have him want to play in Saudi Arabia."
When Harry Kane Could Most Likely Join MLS

As much as Kane may contemplate becoming the next high-profile player to make the transatlantic move to MLS, such a scenario is unlikely to materialize in the near future.
While his current Bayern Munich contract is set to expire at the end of the season, Kane recently suggested that a renewal is "fairly close." Sky Germany reports that an agreement in principle has been reached for Kane to extend his stay at Bayern through 2029.
Kane is coming off an impressive 73-goal 2025–26 campaign across club and international duty and is considered one of the frontrunners for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. At 33, he shows no signs of declining, and it's evident that his immediate focus remains on performing at the highest level in Europe.
However, circumstances could shift considerably by the summer of 2029. Kane will be 36 at that point—precisely the age Messi was when he departed Europe and signed with Inter Miami back in 2023.
Should the reports prove accurate and Kane does sign a new three-year deal, MLS supporters may have to wait until that contract runs its course before the Englishman seriously entertains a move to North America.
Don Garber Insists MLS Has to 'Get Better'

Few people understand MLS's inner workings better than Garber, who has served as league commissioner since 1999—making him the second longest-serving commissioner among major U.S. sports leagues. MLS has undergone remarkable growth under his leadership, evolving from a fledgling competition into a league capable of attracting global superstars. Yet Garber acknowledges there is still significant progress to be made.
"We just went from a country road, now we're getting onto the highway," Garber said. "And we've got to get better. We have to have a league that is more competitive, that has an ability to get into the Club World Cup and win games.
"Miami won one. Not just be there but have people think that an MLS team can compete against other clubs in the world."
After 27 years at the helm, Garber will step down as MLS commissioner at the start of the new year to take on a new role as league chairman. He will hope that the groundwork he helped lay to elevate MLS's standing will continue to draw players of Kane's quality to the league.
