MLS Dark Horse Emerges in Shocking Lewandowski Transfer Pursuit

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has engaged in "encouraging discussions" with Chicago Fire regarding a potential transfer to Major League Soccer, according to recent reports.

The Polish striker has established himself as one of the globe's premier forwards over the last decade and a half, delivering exceptional performances at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona—three institutions that have secured numerous titles thanks to his impact.

Now 37 years old, Lewandowski maintains his elite performance level at Barça. He netted 42 goals across all competitions in 2024–25—his finest tally for the Spanish club—with 27 strikes in La Liga helping secure the championship from arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Physical setbacks have hampered Lewandowski's 2025–26 season, though he has still managed to score eight times in La Liga across 12 appearances. His European impact has diminished, however, as his five Champions League matches have yielded zero goals.

With his deal expiring this summer, widespread rumors suggest Barça might seek to part ways with Lewandowski to acquire a younger, more dynamic replacement. Harry Kane, Julián Alvarez and Erling Haaland have emerged as targets, though the viability of such transfers—considering Barça's persistent financial difficulties—remains questionable.

MLS and Saudi Arabia have emerged as Lewandowski's most probable destinations, potentially marking the conclusion of his elite European journey.

According to BBC Sport, Chicago Fire are spearheading the pursuit of Lewandowski and have already conducted discussions with him—negotiations described as "encouraging" and potentially resulting in a summer move. Lewandowski is reportedly "receptive" to relocating to North America, with his salary demands being manageable within the Fire's budget constraints.

The Fire possess an additional advantage with Lewandowski appearing on their 'discovery list,' preventing other MLS clubs from signing him without compensating Chicago. This would currently eliminate the prospect of Lewandowski joining Inter Miami, who have an available designated player position following Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets' retirements.

Supporting the likelihood of Lewandowski's move to Chicago, the city hosts America's largest Polish population, which could be utilized to boost club interest similar to Son Heung-min's impact at LAFC this summer.
