MLS Giants Cut Ties with Two Major Flops in Shocking Same-Day Exodus

Toronto FC has officially ended the contracts of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, parting ways with two players who are considered among Major League Soccer's most underwhelming signings as the club restructures its Designated Player approach.

The duo represented the team's most expensive acquisitions, with Insigne earning $15.4 million annually, ranking only behind current league MVP Lionel Messi in terms of salary. These decisions mark a major overhaul for the Eastern Conference club, which sits in 13th place after securing merely four victories in 19 matches this campaign. The organization utilized both of its contract buyout options available. Insigne's salary will be removed from the 2025 financial plan and creates an opening in the Designated Player roster.

While Insigne's career path remains uncertain at age 34, Bernardeschi's destination appears to be taking shape. Italian Serie A club Bologna is reportedly in serious negotiations with the player, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

"The organization expresses gratitude to Lorenzo for his contributions during his three-year tenure. Following extensive conversations, we have reached a mutually beneficial arrangement for all parties. We extend our best wishes to Lorenzo for his future endeavors," stated Toronto FC general manager Jason Hernandez.

Hernandez delivered comparable remarks regarding Bernardeschi's departure, while Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Keith Pelley provided additional context about the club's rationale. "The Designated Player framework remains essential to Toronto FC's competitiveness in Major League Soccer, and the organization will maintain its focus on TFC's immediate, intermediate, and long-range planning in the coming weeks."

Insigne initially arrived at Toronto in January 2022, featuring in 76 matches for the franchise. He netted 19 goals while contributing 18 assists throughout various competitions. Bernardeschi, who also joined in 2022, tallied 26 goals and recorded 22 assists across 99 total appearances in all tournaments. Both athletes were commonly regarded as among the league's most disappointing acquisitions. Toronto FC now has the chance for a complete reset as they plan for what lies ahead.
