MLS Stars Thomas Muller and Wilfried Zaha Face Uncertain Destinies as 2026 Season Looms
The destiny of several major MLS superstars is taking shape as Vancouver Whitecaps' Thomas Müller and Charlotte FC's Wilfried Zaha have both announced their commitments to remain for the 2026 MLS campaign.
Müller, who joined Vancouver in August for the 2025 season with a 2026 option clause, has confirmed his continuation and hinted at potential participation in the shortened 14-match season scheduled for 2017 before aligning with European league calendars.
"Absolutely, at maximum intensity," Müller stated to Kicker.
The German icon earned slightly above $1.4 million in 2025 as a Targeted Allocation Money player, but is anticipated to occupy a Designated Player position in 2026 as Vancouver restructures their squad composition.
Regarding 2027? "It's possible. Many things are possible," the 35-year-old expressed on the Sekeres and Price podcast.
Müller made an impressive debut with Vancouver, recording nine goals and four assists across his initial 10 matches. He also secured his 35th championship with the Canadian Championship victory, establishing him as Germany's most successful player in terms of trophies.
"I believe it's because I enjoy it," Müller explained about connecting with the city and organization. "I'm accustomed to engaging with the community and residents... I experienced that in Munich for many years.
"It brings me greater satisfaction to establish some connection. I want to belong because when I feel integrated into the city, my ability to contribute successfully to the community also grows."
Vancouver has not yet officially announced this development.
Wilfried Zaha Confirmed to Stay in Charlotte

At Charlotte FC, Zaha, who arrived on loan from Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray before the 2025 MLS season, achieved performance-related milestones that activated an extension of his loan arrangement through the 2026 MLS season.
Despite experiencing some frustrating moments and occasional subpar performances, Zaha's inaugural season with Charlotte proved largely successful. His contribution of ten goals and ten assists across 31 appearances helped Dean Smith's team cope with Patrick Agyemang's departure to Derby County and Pep Biel's injury setbacks.
Biel, who was on loan from Greek side Olympiacos, also had his permanent transfer option exercised.
Charlotte FC was eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs in the opening round by New York City FC. They now prepare for their 2026 season kickoff on Feb. 21 against St. Louis CITY SC.
