MLS Top Scorer Tai Baribo Trapped in War-Torn Israel as Conflict Intensifies

Tai Baribo currently tops the MLS Golden Boot standings, yet he and his loved ones remain stranded far from the Philadelphia Union, trapped in Israel as the nation faces an intensifying conflict with Iran.

Baribo departed from the Union for international service with Israel following their May 31 encounter against FC Dallas, participating in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match versus Estonia and a friendly against Hungary, both played on foreign soil.

Following these matches, he returned to Israel to allegedly undergo treatment for a calf problem and participate in a United States Embassy appointment related to his green card process, but has remained trapped due to escalating Middle Eastern tensions—missile exchanges between Iran and Israel have resulted in the shutdown of numerous airports and border passages.

This past Monday evening, Baribo's spouse, Linoy Barlev, shared a video on her Instagram story displaying the Union forward in a protective shelter. Additionally, recent social media content showed Baribo seemingly at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, visiting young victims of the ongoing conflict.

Although no official statement has been released by Baribo or his relatives, Union manager Bradley Carnell addressed media representatives last week, stating: "He remains in Israel, and we are closely observing the current circumstances. We maintain daily communication, often multiple times per day. We're uncertain about his return date. We continue to monitor his situation as events unfold."

Baribo represents one of four Israeli athletes competing in MLS, joining Charlotte FC's Liel Abada and Idan Toklomati, plus the New England Revolution's Ilay Feingold.

Regarding his performance on the field, Baribo has emerged as one of MLS's standout performers this campaign, netting 13 goals across 16 appearances, and contributing to the Union's Eastern Conference leadership during Carnell's inaugural season.

This represents a notable advancement in his development, though not an unexpected trajectory. He netted 17 goals in 21 appearances in 2024, while simultaneously preparing for his marriage and serving his national team.

Baribo has already been absent for one fixture, the Union's 2-1 triumph over Charlotte, though they now prepare for their upcoming clash against the Chicago Fire on June 25, with uncertainty surrounding whether Baribo might return in time.
