MLS Unleashes Revolutionary Overhaul to Match Elite Global Soccer Powerhouses

Major League Soccer is restructuring its calendar to synchronize with Europe's premier soccer competitions, matching FIFA's international windows beginning in 2027. The league will simultaneously implement a revamped regular-season structure.

MLS ownership approved this calendar transformation on Thursday.

Known as MLS 3.0, these modifications will launch the regular season in July, concluding with Decision Day in April. The MLS Cup playoffs will subsequently commence, extending through May. These adjustments take effect with the 2027-28 campaign.

The revised schedule incorporates an extended winter hiatus to prevent matches during severe winter conditions, particularly affecting teams like Minnesota United, Toronto FC, and Columbus Crew, among others. This break will feature limited December fixtures and no competition through February, before regular season action resumes in February.

How Will MLS Restructure Schedules?

MLS will implement the comprehensive new system for 2027–28, but will feature a transitional year in 2027, following several markets hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The transitional year will be 2027, featuring a condensed 14-match MLS season conducted between February and April, followed by MLS Cup playoffs in May.

Format Modifications Beginning 2027

MLS has not revealed complete structural overhauls to its competition format in the announcement, but confirmed it will implement a new regular season structure that "combines aspects of the international game and North American sporting traditions."

According to The Athletic, the league will transition to a unified-table competition, divided into five six-team divisions starting in 2027.

How Does the Revised MLS Schedule Compare to Current Format?

Despite the calendar adjustment, the months featuring MLS action remain relatively comparable, as it has operated under the spring-to-fall framework. Currently, the MLS offseason spans from mid-December through February's final week—similar to the newly introduced winter pause.

The sole month presently featuring MLS regular-season action that will be eliminated from the new structure is June. However, that month typically includes international competitions where MLS teams compete without several key players.

This transition also positions the league's championship match, MLS Cup, during spring rather than the often harsh temperatures accompanying its current December timing.

A primary benefit of this schedule transformation is enabling MLS players to completely participate in international windows without disadvantaging their clubs. Under the existing structure, MLS teams could compete without multiple stars due to conflicts between regular-season and international fixtures.

Synchronizing with international windows also guarantees uninterrupted playoff progression.

Recently, playoffs have been interrupted by November's international break. This season, both Vancouver Whitecaps and LAFC experienced three weeks between their opening-round matches and Western Conference semifinal contests.
