Mohamed Salah Delivers Unforgettable Performance in Tearful Liverpool Farewell

Mohamed Salah brought down the curtain on a remarkable Liverpool career on Sunday, featuring in his final match wearing the red jersey as the 2025–26 season drew to a close.

Back in March, the 33-year-old confirmed his departure at the end of the campaign, a year ahead of his contract's expiration. From that point on, fans began counting down every "last" Salah would experience at Liverpool, with his final appearance serving as the centerpiece of an emotional farewell.

Despite a complicated dynamic with manager Arne Slot, Salah was still handed a starting spot at Anfield against Brentford, as was Andy Robertson, who also received a fitting send-off before departing Merseyside.

It was largely Salah's night, however, and the Egyptian made sure to leave a lasting impression, even if the 1–1 final scoreline denied him the perfect fairytale ending.

A Mixed Opening Showcase

Salah took up his familiar position on the right wing for the last time at Anfield, visibly eager to make his presence felt from the opening whistle. His sharp passing was immediately evident, as was his precise delivery from the corner flag.

As the match settled, however, Salah found himself frustrated by Brentford left back Keane Lewis-Potter. The forward was closely tracked and couldn't find the burst of pace needed to escape the defender, leading to hurried decisions that often resulted in wayward crosses or heavy touches that killed any attacking momentum.

Salah also failed to beat Lewis-Potter in any dribble and won none of his ground duels in the opening quarter-hour. It appeared as though it might be yet another underwhelming outing for the club icon, who had struggled throughout the season to recapture his best form.

Salah Bursts to Life

Everything shifted in the 19th minute. Following a brief but animated exchange with Dominik Szoboszlai, Salah stepped forward to take a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. He curled a left-footed effort that struck the outside of the post, narrowly denying what would have been a dream goal in his farewell appearance.

Caught flat-footed in the center of his goal, Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher could only watch as the woodwork came to his rescue. Salah, along with the rest of Anfield, could only groan in disbelief.

Even so, the 33-year-old suddenly had a new confidence about him. Shortly after, he got the better of Lewis-Potter and drove into the penalty area, unleashing a threatening shot that Kelleher had to dive to keep out at his near post.

Salah was now fully switched on, soon demanding the ball from Szoboszlai as he darted forward. The Hungarian responded with a perfectly weighted through ball, but Salah's first touch let him down, allowing a cluster of light blue shirts to clear the threat.

The winger remained central to Liverpool's attacking play for the remainder of the first half, most notably during a counter-attack just before the break. Robertson launched a long ball that dropped perfectly into Salah's run, and with two defenders closing in, he brought it under control inside the box and looked set to shoot — only for Lewis-Potter to make a clean tackle despite loud penalty appeals from the home supporters.

Salah Gets His Moment—And a Bit of History

Salah picked up in the second half right where he left off. He forced another solid save from Kelleher in the 52nd minute before transitioning into a creative role.

A well-judged ball from Ryan Gravenberch sent Salah racing down the right flank with plenty of space ahead of him. With time and room to work, he dribbled into the box, spotted Jones making his run, and delivered a stunning pass with the outside of his left boot that his teammate finished to hand Liverpool a 1–0 lead.

From the moment his free kick rattled the woodwork, Salah had looked destined to have his defining moment — and what a way to deliver it, with a trademark trivela assist.

Even more remarkable, the assist was Salah's 93rd in the English top flight since arriving at Liverpool in 2017, surpassing club legend Steven Gerrard to become the outright record-holder for Premier League assists in Liverpool's history.

An Emotional Goodbye

The assist proved to be Salah's final meaningful contribution before Slot withdrew him in the 74th minute. The 33-year-old took his time soaking in the farewell, absorbing the thunderous applause from the stands and embracing his teammates as tears filled his eyes.

Before stepping off the pitch for the last time in a red shirt, Salah dropped to his knees and pressed his forehead to the turf, cherishing one final moment at the ground that had made him a Liverpool and Premier League legend.

Even a brief embrace with Slot on the touchline couldn't diminish the magnitude of his send-off.
