Mohamed Salah Faces Fierce AFCON Challenge as Egypt Storms Into Semi-Finals
Jay-Jay Okocha, the former midfielder, has cautioned that Mohamed Salah must secure the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt to be considered a true legend.
Throughout his remarkable nine-year tenure at Liverpool, Salah has carved out his place in Premier League folklore as one of the competition's greatest ever talents, though there remains a lingering sentiment that opinion across his home continent remains split regarding his overall legacy.
While he has secured two Premier League crowns and a Champions League triumph with Liverpool, the AFCON title remains absent from Salah's collection, having suffered defeat in two finals with an Egyptian team frequently tipped as tournament favorites.
This missing piece in his trophy collection, according to Nigerian legend Okocha, represents the barrier between Salah and recognition among Africa's greatest players.
"Across Africa, you could claim every possible club honor, but without national team success, you won't be viewed as a legend," he commented during Channel 4's broadcast of Egypt's semi-final qualification.
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi supported this view, stating: "This player will be desperate to claim this competition because it has escaped him.
"You can discuss Premier League glory and Champions League success, but AFCON victory is essential."
Salah Advances Closer to AFCON Glory
Salah has displayed excellent form for Egypt during this winter's tournament. He has featured in four of his team's five matches, finding the net in every appearance and registering his maiden assist of the competition during Saturday's thrilling 3–2 victory over defending champions Ivory Coast.
"It was an ideal result, but as I've mentioned previously, we are battling for our nation," Salah said following Egypt's triumph against the Ivory Coast.
"We hope to advance past the next match too, facing a formidable adversary, but we'll deliver our maximum effort. We are competing with tremendous intensity, you can witness the players' commitment, everyone is giving everything. We continue pushing forward."
This means Salah's return to Liverpool will be delayed further as he gears up for Wednesday's semi-final clash with Senegal. The Reds will continue without Salah for Saturday's fixture against Burnley, with the midweek Champions League encounter versus Marseille now representing his earliest potential comeback.
The AFCON final is set for Jan. 18. Should Egypt reach that stage, Salah might not rejoin Liverpool until the away match at Bournemouth the subsequent weekend.
