Following nine years at Liverpool, Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah is reportedly heading to Türkiye to sign with Trabzonspor.
Salah has been at the heart of transfer rumors throughout the summer after departing Anfield as a free agent at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season. The 34-year-old had been connected to moves to MLS, the Saudi Pro League, and Beşiktaş, but a different club appears to have secured his services.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Salah has signed a two-year contract with Trabzonspor, where he will be reunited with former Premier League players André Onana and Stefan Savić under manager Fatih Tekke.
The Turkish club also issued an official statement confirming transfer talks with Salah, who is expected to touch down in Trabzon on Wednesday. "Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
"The player is set to arrive in Trabzon later that same evening. Details regarding the welcome event in Trabzon will be communicated to the public through our club's official channels throughout the day."
Salah's Unglamorous Destination Comes With Major Perk
Any new destination would have felt like a downgrade for one of the Premier League's all-time legends, particularly given that the contract extension Salah signed in April 2025 had secured his place at Anfield through the 2026–27 campaign. The striker had initially envisioned himself remaining a Liverpool player next season, until he confirmed in March that he would not be honoring the agreement.
It is quite a dramatic shift for Salah to go from making 442 appearances and netting 257 goals in a red jersey to now playing outside Europe's top five leagues. The gulf between Liverpool and Trabzonspor is vast, much like the difference in quality between the Premier League and the Süper Lig.
It would be one thing if Salah had joined reigning champions Galatasaray, but instead he is heading to Trabzonspor, who finished third in the league last season. As a result, the two-time Premier League champion will not be able to compete in the Champions League — a tournament he won with Liverpool back in 2018–19.
The upside, however, is that Trabzonspor holds a place in the Europa League. While it may not be Europe's most prestigious club competition, it still gives Salah the opportunity to chase European glory — something he would have had to abandon entirely had he chosen MLS or the Saudi Pro League.

Salah previously featured in the Europa League during his stints at Basel, Fiorentina, and Roma. He also represented Liverpool in the competition during 2023–24, contributing five goals. The Egyptian has yet to lift the trophy, however, and winning it with Trabzonspor would stand as a remarkable achievement in the final chapter of his career.
Salah demonstrated this summer that he remains capable of delivering in high-stakes moments despite a turbulent final season at Liverpool, which saw him temporarily dropped from the squad amid poor form and a reported falling out with former manager Arne Slot. The 34-year-old guided Egypt to a historic round of 16 appearance at the 2026 World Cup, and he now looks to replicate that kind of success in what is shaping up to be a fascinating new chapter.
